So do any of you guys have annoying parents that are like telling you the school you want to go to is too far away? My parents are appauled by the idea of me wanting to live in NYC "its so unsafe" its 5 hours away, you'll be so far away from us...blah blah blah.
If it was about anything else I'd just walk away or blast my music but its a major life choice and they are going to fund my education.... how do I make them understand that this isnt just a whim and ill change my mind when i get there.. have any of you had similar experiences?

go with your choice. convince your parents that they need to let you go eventually.

first thing to do, is accept the admission for a school in NYC you apply to.
Second, don't tell your parents about this decision. Before May 1, tell them you are still deciding.
third, after May 1, tell them you are going to NYC and convince them to let you go.

Not really. My mom said she'd be sad if I went far, far away. I told her too bad.

When in doubt, listen to tenchi.

Tenchi that is immature. It IS their money and that could ruin your relationship. Just reason with them and show them why they need to let you go for a while and that you'll still visit them whenever...

thats about the distance I will be, mayb a half n hour more. They just have to accept that this is best for you.

tell them to shut the hell up

Heh, they're paying for you. Maybe not then. Lucky.

My parents don't want me going away because it will cost more. Too bad, because I'm definitely not staying here.

Five hours. FIVE.

Now how far away would that be from here? I don't even want to think about it.

figgy: that's not immature. This is about you. The choice of college, where you will be in the next 4 years. It is not about your parents. Your parents can make recommendation. I won't want to spent the next 4 years of my life in a college I don't want to go to. Is your parents going to college next year, or you? You are old enough to make your own decision.

My parents wouldn't even let me apply to places outside of a 5 hour drive from Atlanta or where I didn't have family. So I was really limited to Boston and Washington DC schools. Not that it's a bad thing, but I managed to apply to NYU just for kicks and got in, but my parents wouldn't let me go. Kind of annoying because I want to go to their law school. Bleh.

SilverClover, as I had say in the previous post, this is about you. Parents are not always right. Try to tell your parents why going to NYU would be better in a long run.

tenchi, sure college is where we will be spending the next four years of our lives, but for the most part it's also where our parents will be sending checks for a considerable amount of money to for the next four years of their lives. So they have a right to some influence in decision making. But it's still worth fighting for.

I had my heart set on California, applied to Stanford, USC, and Santa Clara despite my mom's anxiety about me applying to schools far far away, and got in to all three. And where am I going next year? UMD-College Park because it's free. This way I save my parents and myself money and have more freedom to go places during the vacations and such.

Pay for it yourself and then you can decide on your own.

Tenchi, I applied somewhere else early decision so it's really kind of a nonissue. Plus Brandeis is a better school overall. I'm just getting back at my parents by spending every summer studying abroad (as I should, I'm an IR major).

^ir major whats that? also thats a great idea: i will do sophomore, junior, and probably senior year abroad so i can get back at my parents. so techn ically if i do those 3 years abroad i would only be spending one year at my university.

ir is international relations.

Dear god, I feel like we have the same parents. I live in Philly, and desperately want to go to NYU! My parents, however, insist that it's too far (it's like 1.5 hours by train!) and they're really pushing for me to go to Villanova.

I don't know what to do. I've cried, I've yelled, I've been reasonable and talked to them. They just suck, and I'll be miserable for the next four years.

Tell your parents to go screw themselves because no amount of convincing will change your mind.

And 5 hours isn't that bad. Tell them about the high school (yes, HIGH SCHOOL) students that fly 20, (yes TWENTY as in FIVE TIMES FOUR) hours from Saudi Arabia to balmy California to go to HIGH SCHOOL. Tell them you can definitely do the 5 hour trip.
