@labradoodlemom, the party scene is there but it’s such a big and varied school that there are plenty of other options besides clubbing and Greek life. I would recommend living in the honors dorm. My son is a junior there and while he likes to hang out with friends and go to small parties, he was never much interested in fraternities or the club scene. He met his people the first few weeks in the honors dorm, and has been very happy.
Hi! We are from Arkansas and toured UF, Auburn and FSU in 2019. My daughter fell in love with FSU. The student ambassadors were so friendly and the campus was really pretty.
West coaster here with freshman D in the honors college at FSU. Huge party school, lol. Even in covid times. However, according to my D, the kids are also smart and study very hard. I would definitely say it’s a work hard, play hard environment (at least from my D’s experience so far).
The campus is very nice. We weren’t super impressed by the surroundings or Tallahassee. However, the friendliness of the students really stood out-and everything you read on cc confirms that the FSU is a friendly, fun place for students.
I hope we get a chance to come and look, guess it’s worth waiting until feb 18. Do they sent the merit money with the letters? Or does that come out later?
Hi @silverdad1. We’re in the Northeast and haven’t visited FSU due to Covid. Would you please expand on what in the surrounding town you weren’t impressed with? Safety? Culture? Lack of both? TY, Hope
No didn’t seem sketchy or dangerous. We visited on the heels of going to UCLA and Some schools in Boston. Tallahassee was plain by comparison.
Feb 18 as per their website
We visited FSU last week. No official tour but walked the campus. My daughter loved it.
She liked that campus was big, but still contained. It didn’t hurt that it was 20+ degrees warmer than where we were coming from. More than anything it was a gut feeling for her. If she gets accepted on the 18th, FSU is probably her choice.
This was my second time in Tallahassee, and I left with a better impression than I did the last time I was there. Just on my 24 hours there, it doesn’t seem like a bad city, but nothing super impressive beyond the campus, either. I imagine students will spend nearly all of their time on or near campus anyway.
We need to visit! OOS in Colorado so waiting to see if he gets in before buying airfare UGH!!!
Any feel on how competitive it is to be accepted from OOS?
What is the OOS waiver? Are there details on the website for requirements?
OOS waiver covers the difference between in-state and OOS tuition. About $15k value. I think it can cover 50% or 100%. They don’t outline specific requirements, but I think I recall last year’s discussions mentioned 31 ACT and 3.9 FSU calculated GPA as the “magic” numbers.
Thanks! That is awesome! I wonder what the SAT number would be…
I agree with the assessment above. FSU has a beautiful campus. Big, but compact. Tallahassee is just a small town. There are plenty of places within walking distance such as a cvs for necessities and little shops and eateries for the occasional excursion. Otherwise, everything the kids need is on campus. I would also like to mention the Res which is off campus but close and is a fun place for the kids to spend the day at the “beach”.
My daughter emailed last fall asking for a cutoff for OOS waiver (test scores) and was told then 1390 SAT and 31 ACT. That could have changed, but it’s what they told her last fall.
That’s good to know. My daughter had a 33… fingers crossed
Hello. Do you all know if the FSU admissions is different for different majors? Or “major blind”. My son is interested in a different business major now than the one he applied with. Should he contact admissions and change it? Are some business majors easier to get into than others?
There is a change form on the admissions home page that he can choose to change the major on his application. Depending on what major he initially applied to, I would probably change it sooner than later just incase. I’m not sure if they are major blind.
I will look around. On the “status” page I don’t see anything, but maybe there is a different page?
When you’re on the status home page, before you click the button to where you log in, scroll down to the “quick links” and it is located there.
