My DD was accepted OOS with 4.2 WGPA and 1350 SAT, but no OOS tuition waiver. She just got her ACT results this weekend and went up to 31 (1400-1440 SAT). Do you think FSU would adjust her package and now offer OOS tuition?
Did she have all Aās and Bās ?I know some didnāt get it if they had even one C
If she meets the qualifications otherwise, I would definitely ask. Worst they can say is no. Good luck!
@labradoodlemom Weāre one of those people who had only Aās & high Bās with a 31 ACT and didnāt get the OOS waiver.
So do you think it was a 32 for cut off? Or no rhyme or reason to it?
Or was it the recalculated GPA that was the factor?
I thought I read on here that a Super Score of 31 would likely qualify, my guess is the recalculated GPA. I would love to know what FSU recalculated my DD GPA was.
It could be āholisticā - they asked for a resume. It might have been a likely target but not a definite based on other items. You can call and ask. They likely wonāt tell you or adjust it up - but it never hurts to ask. If they say no, no harm.
@tsbna44 Our guidance counselor said adding the resume was redundant to the information entered on the Common App. I hope the absence of her resume wasnāt the underlying cause. I will have my daughter call Admissions to find out.
I respectfully disagree with your guidance counselor. This is directly from FSU as to what they want:
Although the essay and resume are not required but highly recommended, they provide another opportunity to learn more about you.
The Common App is very limited in letting you describe things from a character POV. Iām not saying this is why you didnāt get the scholarship - none of us could know.
But in holistic review, all these things could help - and as most articles point out for optional items, they are not really optional.
I think a guidance counselor is over worked and doesnāt know the ins and outs of thousands of colleges. Itās incumbent upon the student and their family to really dig deep and do their best to understand every nuance they can.
That said, we donāt know why you didnāt get it - but Iām sure everything will work out for you at FSU or wherever you end up.
Iāve seen multiple AOs say that if a resume is a reiteration of the activities section on the Common App, you are wasting their time and itās not necessary to send. My daughter only sent a resume to one school (bc it didnāt take the Common App). She did not send a resume to FSU and was awarded the OOS waiver and was accepted to the Honors College at FSU, so Iām guessing the resume really is optional.
Truth as and I acknowledged that none of us will know. Just trying to offer up possibilities. As many people point out the entire admissions thing is nuts.
My daughter is in at U of SC Honors, supposedly the top Honors in the country but rejected at FSU Honors.
Someone will write in Saturday that they are in at UF yet rejected at FSU.
Thereās no way to know on any of this. We are not admissions.
But most experts say optional means required. In the case of a resume because common app was limited in characters you could not truly describe accomplishments so my daughter did so on a resume.
Perhaps everyone is correct that this is a numbers scale.
But then why do some with lesser stats Trump those with better ones ?
Honestly weāll never know.
Yeah, itās such a mystery. Some of it really seems to make no sense. I even saw one student become a finalist for a top scholarship (may have been UVA) and then get either rejected or deferred there.
It can be such a long and frustrating process. Good luck to everyone!
My D provided a resume, and used it to describe her activities in much greater than she could in the space offered by the common app.
@tsbna44 Iāll feel absolutely terrible if this is the reason why she didnāt get the waiver. She has a resume that would have been easy to attach. I am going to call admissions.
As someone said, they got in without it. I donāt think the AOs would tell you and you shouldnāt feel bad.
Your child will end up at a great college, meet their BFF, perhaps even a spouse, get a great job, and will be proud of that college forever.
Things will work out - and life will be great.
Many of these kids (hopefully) are getting into numerous colleges - and you can only go to one.
Many of these kids who go to their absolute #1 greatest ever for them college will have a bad roommate, bad professor, bad grades, etc. and will even transfer.
We have to remember - we are all doing our best to find the right spot for our kids - but just as admissions is a crap shoot, so is making the right choice. No one knows.
So just know - whether you decide to go elsewhere because of the waiver - itās not the end of the world. Thereās no guarantee FSU would have been a panaceaā¦thereās no guarantee for anyone. And who knows - it may end up the best thing that could have happened to you.
Iām just saying - donāt feel terrible. Itās happened and great things will still happen for your child.
@tsbna44 I could not agree with you more. Iām having trouble explaining this to my 17-year-old daughter, who has already made friends with people from a school she is admitted to back in December. A school that gives merit but has not given us money yet, and we do not know if it is coming. I keep telling her to keep her options open until we have ALL of the information to make a decision and that it is very likely, these girls sheās talking to now may not be her best friends once school starts. I know she heard me. Iām just not sure her 17-year-old social brain was able to process what I told her.
My kid is already mentally attached to College of Charleston which has lesser āpedigreeā than others - not that it should matter. She got their largest merit which is $12K of last yearās $33K - so yes, schools like FSU for me are a lot cheaper and if you trust rank, better although Iām not sure that should matter unless itās Ivy League.
But it is hard for kids (and parents) to keep it non-emotionl.
We applied to 21, probably will get into 16/17 and so it makes it harder. But my daughter has started to eliminate - both U Tampa and Indiana are out
The plan is to visit FSU and UM at Spring Break. I told her to go see Tampa - it meets her needs - mid size and in a city - but she does not like the vibe of the accepted student text group - which is basically not to be a student but just a partier.
I mean FSU and UF. UM deferred her and itās not close. If we get a great offer to UM (doubtful), weād fly to visit.
I realized the ACT submitted as 30. Not sure why her last test wasnāt received, so we just ordered it from ACT to be sent.
