I have done some digging and found the following about the FSU Core GPA:
They only calculate core classes, not electives. An A = 4. Add .5 for an honors class and 1 for an AP class.
When using this calculator, my daughter has a 4.4 Core GPA

Unless they are AP, AICE, IB or Dual enrollment. Then they don’t need to be core.
Are you talking about OSU? I have seen you on their blogs? We are in the same boat with OSU and getting ANY info from them is like pulling teeth.
Have you been able to get in touch with admissions? Were they able to help?
@tsbna44, my daughter got Deferred to UM too. We got lucky and snuck in college tours last February, and thankfully my daughter joined us back in 2017 to visit a bunch of schools when my son was looking. When all of the final numbers roll in (hopefully in the next month or so), the battle will begin. Cost, academics, social life, employment opportunities will all be laid out to make a decision. I wish everyone good luck. I know I need it!
@wlehockey Yes! I’ve seen you on the OSU thread, and we are most definitely in the same boat. This is the second time I find myself in the same boat with that school. There are so many great options out there and a year ago wasn’t remotely interested in going there. She wanted a warm-weather school. She almost didn’t apply, and now she’s pining for merit so that she can consider going there.
All of these questions can be answered in under an hour in a DM to FSU admission on twitter. They are awesome.
My son has been a die hard Buckeye since birth. We didn’t even apply to FSU, only UF. It is just frustrating how big schools like UF and FSU can get things out in one day (not two like OSU) and they can get merit out right away. My son was admitted to OSU back in December and still crickets on merit aid. Ugh!!!
I doubt this is the reason. I think I saw others on CC that didn’t submit and were admitted. Just have to walk away and move on to greener pastures. Sometimes I think the parents get more involved than the kids.
We’ve been through the admissions cycle 2 years in-a-row with S20 and S21. One thing we’ve all learned is that for some of the admissions and scholarships there is no rhyme or reason. Most have gone as planned but a few curve balls were thrown-in. It probably was a good thing S21 saw it last year. He’s been very low key about the whole thing. Doesn’t want to talk about any of them until all offers are in-hand.
Good luck.
@chmcnm Good luck to you too. It was much easier with my son the first time I went through the process. He’s a lot more laid back about things. My daughter is completely different, but in the end, this is about getting an education to set her up for the future without accumulating tens of thousands of dollars in undergraduate debt. I hate being the bad guy and breaking her heart. These kids have been through enough.
What FL schools did you visit? And what were they like? I’m hoping to get a chance to visit during spring break but its especially hard since I’m in IL.
@avaw21 We visited FSU & UF. My daughter liked them both very much (but liking a school is very subjective). Living in NY, she knows more people that go to UF (I assume because of the perceived difference between the two schools).
My understanding is that the Wed/Thur housing window this week is just to get your contract number i.e. place in line. Everyone who submits a housing contract during that window will go into a random draw for place in line. Anyone submitting a housing contract starting Friday will then go in line behind those people in order they are received. I don’t believe you are required to select a specific dorm at this stage but it may be worth an email to the housing office to confirm.
Thanks for that info. Looks like we will make a deposit in order to get a spot in the initial waiting window.
I think you could appeal, so I would definitely try that. You do get OOS waiver with a 31.
@flprepaidmom left voicemail and email Friday. Still no word today. Giving up hope.
Try a DM on Twitter
done, thanks for the tip.
I guess these poor AO’s are buried in thousands of emails. In general, they are responsive. Probably just give them a little more time.
Thank you for the info. Do you know if you can take these classes online for this summer?
