You mentioned being in IB. I know how tough the IB curriculum can be (went through that hell myself!). It’s odd that with your profile you were deferred, so I want to ask two questions that could maybe shed some light on what the reasoning was for the decision.

Did you ever receive any grades in high-school credit-earning courses of a D or F for a semester?

Have you gotten more than 1 C in a single semester?

Yeah, they deferred me because of my grades. Yes to both questions but never any Fs. I received many C semester averages junior year, unfortunately. The main reason why I got deferred was because they wanted to see my senior grades improve. I really really passionately dislike the IB program, lol.

I am not sure about weighted verses unweighted GPA’s and all of the stuff I read about here on College Confidential I can tell you this…

Her GPA is 3.4 She has earned 3 C’s in her high school career, 2 in AP courses, 1 in a regular class (don’t remember which one). One of those C’s was in the mid year grades she just sent in. It was in AP stats. THe rest of her grades were A’s and B’s

Her ACT score was 25, but I think with super scoring it was a 26.

Keep in mind the schools don’t just look at grades. I am sure there other factors. Some we are aware of and others we may not be aware of.

I believe that’s a 3.4 UW judging from what you’re telling me, which is good. This is pretty helpful! My grades are slightly lower, but then again, all the classes I have taken in my high school career are either honors, pre-IB, IB, or AP, excluding a few electives in freshman year. I just wanted a general idea of what they were looking for and this is good! Thank you!

A D for a semester grade is typically killer for FSU. With you being in IB that might be a bit less of a killer, but it’s going to be a toss-up on whether you get accepted. I would lean slightly towards you being accepted.

@Pasbal: My senior first semester grades are a significant improvement though, so hopefully I get in! ahhhhh this is so stressful. Is race a factor at all for admission decisions? Because I’m Asian. Do they favor minorities to try to get a balance in the student body?

OH. and FSU counts all IB/AP classes in the GPA recalculation, correct? Because I have IB Film, which is technically “not academic” but it’s IB.

It definitely helps if you have an upward trend. I know that in my year, a LOT of people got admitted to FSU from my IB program that had either multiple Cs or a D for a semester grade, and then in the last 2 years FSU has been a lot less forgiving (even going so far as to outright deny people, not just deferring them).

Race isn’t really a factor. I mean, it plays a role, but it’s normally not going to be huge. I’d think being in IB plays a bigger role.

I do believe that all IB courses are counted, although I can’t say for certain. If I were you, I’d probably just email the admissions office (or call) and ask them, just to be certain.

If you mean from high school, 2009. If you mean FSU, I’m graduating this semester :).

And no problem. I’ve been down the IB path so you have my sympathy. The landscape of applying to FSU has changed significantly since I did it way back in 2008.

Haha oh, you’re pretty young then! I was picturing you to be older for some reason lol. Oh! My ACT score improved to a 28 superscore! I’m hoping that helps my decision. I got a 32 on English <3
