Why did I get deferred from FSU?

I’m a Senior in the IB Program and I just checked my FSU status only to find out I was deferred.

For reference:

  • My GPA (weighted) is 4.2 and (unweighted) 3.7
  • ACT is a 30, and (new) SAT is 1310
  • I’ve been an honor student my entire life until second semester Junior year when I got a D in AP Calculus (I think this is the reason why I got deferred; any thoughts?.. I’ve been looking at other discussions and I read that FSU is flagging students with any sort of D grade and deferring them).
  • This year, first semester of senior year I also got 3 C’s… so now because I got deferred I need to send my mid-year report and I heard that admissions hates a downward trend, would these C grades imply that I’m on that track and they won’t admit me??
  • I have over 200 hours of volunteer work and I am a member of NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Kiwanis International, Habitat for Humanity, NAHS and hold two leadership positions of secretary and treasurer in two of the aforementioned clubs.
  • I’ve already been accepted to USF but I want to go to either FSU or UF, now with this deferral do you think that UF is going to defer me too?? I feel like my life is over right now.

What I don’t understand is that I have friends with lower GPAs and test scores than me like 3.8-4.0 weighted, and SATs in the 1100s that got in today to FSU. So I think it’s just because of the one D that I got.

The bottom line is even though I was deferred today, do you think I will still get in? Like I know a deferral pretty much means a ‘no’ in most cases; is it the same way for FSU? About how many people get in that are deferred? Also I know it is much harder to get into UF so should I just accept my fate, that because I did not get into FSU, I won’t be getting into UF?

Sorry for the long post, I appreciate any input I get. Thank you for reading.

I can tell you are very distressed about this, but you have done a great job in high school. Perhaps you should give FSU a call and tell them about your desire to attend and find out what they need from you to improve your chance of getting in.

Kris10, are you a Florida resident or are you out of state?

@MotherRusher Florida resident

You can always do a year of CC then aim to transfer into FSU as a last resort.

@sherylfl yea I plan to call them tomorrow, thank you for your advice!

Yes, it’s almost certainly because of the D that you received. Any grade below a C on your transcripts is almost certain deferral.

Just submit your mid-year grades to FSU and as long as you didn’t get another grade below a C, you’ll most likely be accepted in the second round. FSU loves IB students but even being in IB is no longer an acceptable trade-off for getting grades below a C.
