My son was accepted both to UCF and FSU and he wants to major in Mechanical Engineering. He knows that UCF is ranked higher for engineering, not by much, but he loves FSU.

We have read threads here comparing FSU and UCF engineering programs and many people claim that UCF engineering students have a greater chance for internships and job opportunities due to their central proximity in the state and NASA being close. Is this really true? He would love to talk to an FSU engineering student or recent grad to get a true feel for the engineering program.

I’m a freshman FSU engineering student so I only have one class at the engineering school but I’ve done all my pre-reqs (finishing this semester). I really like fsu main campus but im not so crazy about the eschool. But ive only had 1 class and its a really dumb engineering orientation class so maybe thats part of the reason.

Maybe it’s personal preference but it’s annoying- I don’t wanna go out to some school to take my classes. I heard some people barely go on the main campus after junior year which idk, kind of takes away from the whole college feel. I think the eschool is depressing looking inside and out. If i could do it again I dont think Id do fsu.

Visit the engineering school when you come up and visit here. It’s like a 10 minute drive from campus and see what your kid thinks; some people don’t mind it.

I see, I do appreciate the input. My son currently travels 35 minutes for his dual enrollment college courses. At first it was a challenge but now it has turned into a positive. He gets to campus early and takes advantage of the help labs available at the library and gets most of his work done before travelling home.

When we found out that FSU’s ‘eschool’ was 10 minutes off the main campus we both laughed and thought how that would be similar to what he does now. Hopefully there is a library or study areas at the eschool. Is this where the eschool professor’s offices are located as well? If so, this may help with smaller class sizes and professor availability…

Did you apply to any other schools ie, UCF and/or UF? He is still torn on where to go, UCF is much closer to his home and he loves the campus but he didn’t get the same vibe and feel at UCF compared to FSU. When we toured colleges last spring the people were nice at both schools but the immediate warm feeling from the students at FSU was exceptional and left a lasting impression.

Wow 35 min that’s crazy, yeah i guess i’m just not used to it yet. This is my first semester at the eschool and i have never had to commute. It also helps if your son has a car he’s bringing up to tally (or a friend with a car in his class) because the walking to the bus probably adds on 20 minutes each way but then again i live far from the bus stop. Yep, there’s a library and computer room on the eschool campus. Professors at eschool l have offices at the eschool.

I also applied to Georgia tech and UF. I got in Georgia tech and visited both and I really got good vibes from FSU too. I still really do like the main campus and since thats where most of my classes are I’m really happy with it. Just not so much looking forward to only having a couple here at the main campus and most of my classes at the eschool next year.

Besides having a more established program than FSU, UCF has this! <a href=“Lockheed Martin Work Experience Program • Career Services • UCF”>http://career.ucf.edu/lockheed-martin

Not even UF School of Engineering can offer this kind of direct industry work experience with a major corporation. I know because my friend is one of the supervising engineers for students who are in the career experience program. They have an amazing and pertinent experience…
