@WWWard very interesting about UT not needing any portfolio. The same goes to San Francisco State which my son was accepted to. We thought it was so strange that it’s just luck of the draw to get into the program whether or not you have talent. We haven’t toured it yet, awaiting FSU & UCF’s decision. One thing bad about San Francisco State, they only have dorms for Freshman and then you have to live off campus the next year and it’s way too expensive and barely any available apartments near campus…so this one is not appealing to us.
@loribale Yikes. That could be very expensive in San Fran. Good luck with the decisions remaining…
Thanks, you too! Keep us posted!
Wow… I just found out from my daughter that another girl from her high school is interviewing at FSU MPA on Friday, and is among the 48. If true that over 2000 applied, it seems super strange that two of the 48 would end up being from the same public high school. My daughter does not know her well, did not know she had applied and only overheard her talking about it (missing school to go up to Tallahassee on Friday). Odd indeed…
Small world! I bet it’s more like 500 that applied. If you can, ask them at your daughter’s interview…or we will when we go.
Yeah…the film school had around 350 applicants to look at who were accepted by the University. I asked. The total before University admissions were announced was probably closer to 500 or so.
Thanks for the info, @jrmutley .
Thanks, @jrmutley Maybe it was USC SCA that had over 2K applicants overall. I believe I read that somewhere. Either way, if it is true that only 20-24 get admitted as freshmen, with another 6-10 via transfer… for a total of 30, the selection process is super-competitive at FSU MPA. But… what a huge advantage in terms of focus and attention if you are one of the lucky 30.
So true @WWWard. Just wondering if @jrmutley knows anything about UCF since you said your son applied. I called and they said March, and I think they accept 30 ?? My daughter goes to UCF but we have never toured the film school, have you?
A good amount of luck has to be in play as well in this whole process. Consider how many excellent and talented students are in that 350. Even if only 75 or so are really top notch, there has to be some tough decisions made by the committee.
I would love to be a fly on the wall as they whittle those numbers down.
We did tour UCF’s film school. They also have good facilities and a very nice theater. However, my son actually decided to not apply there. He didn’t like the University nearly as much as FSU.
I think he is determined to either study film at FSU or change his major altogether. His current plan is to enroll at FSU and reapply to the film school again next year. If he still doesn’t get in, he is OK with pursuing another path.
My daughter also did not apply to UCF. She does have a # of friends there who love it. None are in film though, so I cannot speak to their film program other than what I have heard.
Thanks for the info @jrmutley. Best of luck to him!
Yes I think applications to FSU usually teeter around 450-500 with only about 250-300 getting all their materials in on time. Still extremely competitive numbers and their applicants are still heavily FL residents. The grad students are a diff story. UCF is not very similar to FSU at all in my experience. FSU has a distinct advantage in terms of faculty, resources, and the professionalism of their program. UCF would be 3rd on my list within the state and maybe on par with Full Sail which is not a university.
Thank you @cruzanlady.
FSU MPA interviews begin today. Good luck to those who have one…
@WWWard good luck to your daughter tomorrow!!
@loribale Thanks! We will be driving up from Tampa after school ends today. I plan to show her around myself this evening and early tomorrow… before her 5 hour session at MPA. Should be interesting…
@cruzanlady What specifically do you know about UCF? To compare a BFA program from a large state university to a diploma mill seems a bit unfair.
@jrmutley–I agreed in saying that Full Sail is not a University. I’m not sure I’d call it a diploma mill. It’s more like a technical school or maybe a conservatory program?? Their gaming majors graduate right into good jobs. I would say UCF and Full Sail film programs are comparable in the student work they put out, the quality and professional level of their equipment, their sets, their faculty. In fact they often cast together from Full Sail’s facilities because from a facility standpoint Full Sail is impressive. Maybe its not fair to compare them program to program.
