There are a million threads on UF vs FSU. I will try to give a balanced summary:

(Disclosure: I am attending FSU)

Both schools have hugely successful athletics programs.
Both schools have a great deal of school spirit and both offer an authentic, “traditional” college experience.

Both schools claim founding dates from the 1850s, which is a bit of a stretch.
The University of Florida did not become a major university until around 1900. Prior to this, it was an agriculture school for white men only.
Florida State did not become a major university until after World War II. Prior to this, it was a women’s college.

As a result, both schools have strengths in certain programs that are stereotypically “masculine” (UF) or “feminine” (FSU).

For engineering, agriculture & medicine: UF > FSU
For theater, film, liberal arts in general & criminology: FSU > UF

Historically, UF has had higher academic rankings than FSU. This is partly due to UF being strong in subjects that generate large research expenditures, namely engineering, agriculture and medicine. Over the past few years, UF has been slipping a bit in rankings, mainly due to budget cuts, and perhaps due a bit of a market correction for the hype that surrounded UF during the Tebow Golden Age. During this same period, FSU has been climbing in the rankings. Though, it is easier to improve when you are starting from a lower ranking to begin with. UF is still ranked higher though and it will probably be for the foreseeable future.

Based on my dealings with people from outside of the state of Florida, both schools seem to be regarded as nothing more than halfway decent southern football schools. Whenever I mention that I attend FSU to a relative from out of state, the reaction is invariably “Oh–that’s the Gators, right?”

Within the state of Florida, UF is generally regarded as a more prestigious and popular school. FSU students are sometimes dismissed as “UF rejects” by UF students and fans. In fact, both schools accept a ton of community college transfers, so most “UF rejects” end up graduating from UF anyway (after transferring over from Sante Fe College–which has a gentleman’s agreement with UF, or other community colleges). To be fair, FSU has a similar arrangement with Tallahassee Community College. However, getting into UF as a freshman is still more competitive than FSU.

My advice would be to base your decision on the specific major that you are interested in and on a visit to both campuses.

To add on to Sweetheartcroc’s advice, FSU’s strength is more non-science majors, such as psychology, criminology, and business. UF has better science & engineering programs. Not that you couldn’t get a good education in either at the opposite school. FSU also has a strong music program, if that’s any help. Both schools are fairly comparable and in my opinion, are the two best public universities in FL.

I have to say that I completely agree with everything SweetheartCroc said. Both schools are really nice depending on what you want to do. UF, as he said is better for health/engineering while FSU is better for business/law.

Trust me, I live in Florida and nearly every week I hear a heated debate about which school is better while simply eating lunch at my high school. The rivalry between the two schools is incredible but again, they are both great at what they do so it really depends on what you’d like to do in the future that will be the deciding factor.

For example, I’m looking into medicine and UF offers the best medical program I can get my hands on in Florida for a cheap cost (I think it’s like $8,000/yr for in-state people like me, which is less than my parents are currently paying for my high school per year 0_o).

Anyways, just make sure YOU’RE the one who decides which is better for you.

Good luck!
