FSU Rogers Hall -Fall 2012

Hi everyone! I just made this account recently to get a bit of feedback from people that are attending FSU atm.

So I just got accepted about...a month ago. (I applied in March) and I was assigned to Rogers hall room 800 something (8th floor I'm assuming....great.) From what I've read on this forum, it's an okay place.

Is there anything I have to watch out for? I heard it's far from the 'nice' area of FSU.

I don't really know anybody either... Do upper division transfer students get the same opportunity to meet new people? You know, cause I always hear how these freshmen come in and don't know anybody and in a week, they pretty much know everyone.

Is it the same for juniors that just transferred?

My major is computer criminology... so how far is the criminal justice building or computer science building from Rogers hall?? I don't have a car so I will be walking or taking the bus, once I figure out the schedule.

Last thing, which isn't really THAT important, but are there places on campus that have a piano? or a place where you can sit down and jam with others? I don't think I'll be allowed in the music hall since I don't really belong there. I wanted to bring my keyboard along but it's going to be too much of a hassle so I'm just bring my acoustic guitar. I really wanted to get into... Cawthorn hall I believe? But apparently it's only for music majors...

Anyway, any input from anybody would be greatly appreciated :) it will help me cool down on the nervousness

Rogers is okay, it’s on the west side right next to Tennessee st. I don’t really know about upperclassmen getting the same opportunities to meet people, but you can always put yourself out there and living on campus will help! Everything is within walking distance. And anyone can go to the music buildings (when they’re not locked) and lock themselves in a practice room with a piano. There are plenty of places to jam, just don’t be a douchy jammer on Landis Green, and you’re good.

ahh that’s good that everything is within a walking distance. I was originally going to get a car before heading to Tallahassee but unfortunately I am unable to find a transfer from this Walgreens I work at, to the ones up there. ):

And douchy jammer?? haha! As in, try not to play on Landis green or… just don’t show off?
Believe me, I think that’s the last thing I want to do… I’ve played with many people that are in way over their heads …not fun at all

Anywho, thanks for the input friend :)

Rogers is all right. I am also a Criminology Major. Really the Criminology buildings in terms of class rooms are spread out around campus I have had ones in HCB, Bellamy, Diffenbaugh, and a couple other buildings. Now for the Hecht house you it would be a nice walk from Rogers but you could take a bus and it would only be a couple stops.

Random, but I contacted my roommate for Rogers Hall and she still hasn’t responded. It’s been 2 weeks now. Who doesn’t check their fsu email? It’s just going to be awkward sharing a room with someone who doesn’t bother to respond to an email. Hopefully she responds soon, b/c there is one more week until move in day. I just don’t want to walk in without knowing a little about her and hoping she doesn’t walk in w/ a microwave and toaster…since I already have those and can’t return them b/c I’ve had them for awhile and don’t have anywhere to store that stuff.Guh.

ooh… I wasn’t planning on e-mailing my roommate first but I ended up doing so anyway. He responded back but didn’t say much, other than asking for my fb.

I move in about a week too… Buutt, best of luck with the situation, hopefully she’ll be a good roomie :)

At least you got a response lol. Yeah hopefully it all works out.
Best of luck to you too.

I’m in the same boat as you PT. I emailed my roomate (through school email) upon recieving my assignment months ago, still to this day no response. My guess is that they are a returning student. Either way, not knowing what to expect when I show up isn’t cool. I’m not left with much of choice besides bringing what I want and risking doubling up or waiting until I get there to see what we need.

omg that’s ridiculous, you contacted her that long ago and still no response. Why wouldn’t anyone not respond to an email? I emailed one of roommates for Summer term, she was a returning student and she responed right away and was very friendly and let us know what she was bringing. The other two their email didn’t show up on mine, but they saw my email and contacted me. So we all spoke before moving in which made things so easy when we all met on move-in day.
For Fall it’s not so easy as it was for Summer. It’s going to be so awkward. Hope it works out for us and they have some legit excuse and turn out to be awesome!

At least you guys have been in the school longer than I have. I’m transferring over from 8 hours away and I don’t know anybody or where anything is!! Haha and I’m sure my roomie is a returning student as well, so I’m not expecting much communication…I think. I could be wrong

Being a current FSU student. I know most of the people I know don’t even use there FSU email to begin with let alone summer lol. If I wasn’t in summer classes I wouldn’t check mine over the summer. As regards to Rogers hall you definitely want to know what your roommate is bringing as the rooms are pretty small especially in the common area you don’t want any extra unneeded items

I have my .edu email linked to my phone and on my Mail app on my laptop. So in a way it’s always getting checked. I can understand that maybe they just don’t check but my future roommate is a new grad or transfer student from the looks of her email addy. Most new students always check their fsu accts. or at least I thought so.
But yeah the rooms are so small that’s the main reason I want her to respond. Unless she comes in w nothing that’ll irk me…hopefully she knows to bring common items like TP, cleaning supplies, paper towels and such.

For those that have contacted your roommate and then didn’t get a response, I suggest trying again. Especially if you’re moving in early, and don’t want your roommate to bring a microwave and stuff that might be difficult to just store in the apartment if you don’t need it, it would be a great idea to just send a second email and be like “hey, I just wanted to let you know that I moved in early, and wanted to tell you that I brought a microwave and X stuff that we don’t need two of” or something.

At worst, they might get annoyed if you email them multiple times, and at best, you avoid having two microwaves, two dish drains, two vacuums, etc. Plus, then they can’t get mad at you if they bring their stuff too and you already said you brought some stuff. Okay, well, maybe they can get mad, but at least it wouldn’t be your fault.

Hopefully this helps. :)

Yeah I moved in to Rogers. It’s very different from what I got used to at Ragans but hey it’s cheap rent and still on campus.
Checking in at Rogers was a breeze and there is way more parking!
@Pasbal
I went ahead and just emailed her again. She was supposed to move in today but never did. Who knows what’s going on.

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know if there are washing/drying machines in Rogers?

If so, how do they work? As in… you swipe your FSUcard and you buy your own detergent and just put your clothes in the machine or…?

There are washing machines and dryers (I believe it’s 2 washers, 1 dryer) on both the 3rd floor and 6th floor. You swipe your FSUCard to use the machines. You have to provide your own detergent, yes. It’s $1.25 (unless it’s changed) for the washer, and 35 cents for the dryer, with extra time being an additional 35 cents. And you’re going to want that machine for at least 30-45 minutes, so plan on spending at least $1 on the dryer.

Just a helpful tip, LaundryView’s FSU site will be amazingly helpful, especially with as few machines as it appears there are in the building:
[Select a Laundry Room](LaundryView)

papertiger, so long as you don’t steal my parking spot, I’m good! :D

There might be way more parking now, but just wait until the 22nd. The McCollum, McCollum/Rogers, and Rogers/Kellum/Smith/Salley parking lots will all be full.

Just to update, FSU Housing posted new rates for the washing machines this year (hooray…).

It’s now $1.50 for the washing machine (up from $1.25) and
$0.45 for 15 minutes in the dryer (up from $0.35).

Ugh nooooooo. Now I’m going to wear every single article of clothing and wash everything in one go.

They changed the housing site. It’s weird, but a little better organized.
I put in a request for a change of halls, some weird vibes living here. I doubt it will even be looked at or approved since I put I am at Rogers and it’s a seperate application altogether, but no harm in trying.

weird vibes?? as in…
