FSU vs. U. Miami

I was accepted to FSU and the University of Miami and am in love with both!

The only thing holding me back from FSU is I plan to study neuroscience; however, I have seen little to no information about a neuroscience major at FSU.

As for Miami, I was weightlisted for fall but accepted for the spring semester and won't start until January 2014. I am worried that I won't receive the full "college experience" though because I will be entering as a freshman in January, when everyone has already had 4 months of getting used to college and getting to know each other. However, Miami has an excellent neuroscience program.

Any advice would be great, I really don't know what to do!

FSU doesn’t have a neuroscience major, you’re right. The neuroscience offering is at the Graduate level.

If you’re looking to do neuroscience at FSU at the graduate level, the Psychology department here only accepts a very small number of applicants from within the FSU department. If that’s what you would like to do, you’d actually be better served by going elsewhere for undergrad, and applying to FSU’s program for grad school.

I don’t think that starting in the Spring semester is really all that much of a disadvantage. It’s not like freshmen starting in the summer really have an advantage over those starting in the Fall. I mean, I guess some people would argue that summer gives you an advantage to learn the campus and everything, but I don’t see it that way.

If grad school is the goal then I’d seriously consider Florida State over Miami simply due to cost savings.

But if they are trying to get into FSU’s neuroscience grad problem, FSU isn’t the place to do your undergrad work. FSU doesn’t accept more than a small handful of students from the undergrad program here into any of the grad programs.

If they are picking between FSU and Miami, and the goal is FSU’s Neuroscience Grad problem, the best choice is to attend a different undergrad program.

Pasbal, Take a look at this link to the [FSU Neuroscience Program.](http://www.neuro.fsu.edu/)

An undergrad at FSU could major in biology, math, psychology or consult with the [med school adviser](Pre-Medical Advising: Overview | College of Medicine) to see what other majors would prepare student the student for a PhD in this work.

This is not to say UM could not offer similar preparation; but at FSU you’d generally pay a lot less.

Actually my goal is to attend grad school at the University of Miami for neuroscience, so would you advise going to FSU or Miami for undergrad?

I’d say FSU. You don’t want to wind up in a mountain of debt after graduate school, and UM is much more expensive. Grad school is even more expensive than undergrad, so if your goal is grad school at UM, save on undergrad expenses with FSU. Good luck!

I would recommend FSU only bc of the money, you also don’t have to major in nueroscience or even psychology to go to graduate school for nueroscience.
If UM is where you see yourself for Grad School, I would save yourself from drowing in debt and go to FSU.
Just my opinion but I would major in something “science-y” and minor in something creative and different to help you stand out in the applicant pool for grad school.
