Would like to know more about University of Nebraska, Lincoln’s scholarships for incoming freshman, OOS. I’m looking for scholarships here that could help cover the entire cost of attendance with Pell Grant/SEOG, FW-SP, and with or without federal direct loans. Their website mentions 3 scholarships as per my liking - Chamber Davis Scholarship (covering full COA), Regents and Chancellors Scholarships (Full tuition), though the eligibility and selection criteria aren’t outlined.
Would like to hear experiences from current/past students and parents on how they went on to get any of those 3 scholarships.
Also, any inputs on how is their Business School (Major-Finance, CFA), internships, OCR, study abroad is appreciated!
sorry; chambers davis is for state residents only.
but look into the Raikes Program. It’s amazing and pretty much full COA. tough to get into; lots of opportunities though
Regents scholarships are for graduates of Nebraska high schools only, but Chancellor’s scholarship is available for out of state. It doesn’t cover board/room or other costs, but does offer full tuition plus $2000. Raikes mentioned above (for Computer/IT/Business) is an excellent and competitive way to get an almost full ride – they used to always be full ride, but now that scholarship varies in terms of what it covers and for whom.
My son was admitted this August for the Freshman class of 2019 and received his scholarship award notices. My son got the Husker Heritage and the George Beadle letters just this week, and they were $15,000 for the GBS, and $7,000 for the HH. If you get the $7K HH, you are an auto admit for the honors college, which comes with a $500 per year book scholarship. I don’t know if you were including that in your calculations above.
@elodyCOH My son (similar stats) applied & was accepted to UNL. I was curious how long after your son’s acceptance were you notified of the merit scholarships (email or snail?). Congratulations on the scholarships by the way! Is he planning to enroll or waiting on other schools?
We got two letters in regular mail, perhaps a week after the official acceptance. He got a phone call from admissions the day he was accepted. It all came very quickly. He is looking at a couple of other schools, but UNL is a serious contender. Congrats to your son on his acceptance! What is his intended major?
My son received an email acceptance (Aug 22) that noted he would get the official written acceptance soon along with other information. Dollars will play a significant role in his decision as he will be OOS for all the schools he is currently considering. He is considering KSU, CSU, UNL, ISU, Purdue and Stanford. He has bee accepted to KSU & ISU (no scholarship information). He is applying to the others schools soon. Major will likely be Physics, Data Science or an Engineering area. I think UNL will be a contender in the end. …My wife and I are both UNL Alums
@funding My son has been accepted at University of Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and University of Alabama Birmingham thus far. He is working on application for Ohio State and University of Texas Dallas, and possibly Texas A&M. He has Presidential at Alabama, and Full Tuition plus at Ole Miss. He is being heavily recruited by Kansas State, Wichita State and University of Kansas He was looking at Kansas, but their scholarships don’t look to be competitive with his other offers. One schools has a 3.5 minimum GPA to keep the scholarship (I think it’s WSU). That’s really tough to do for engineering students from what I gather. So I am thinking he won’t apply there at all.
He applied to Tulane, but that is the only selective school he’s applying to as we have two other kids coming up behind this one. Money is a big concern as we are full-pay nearly everywhere. My son’s ECs are not super exciting. He’s a varsity athlete, but his course workload requires him to take 0 hour classes, which precludes him from participating in clubs at school. These generally are held in the period before school starts, not after school the way it’s done in most districts. After freshman year he had AP science classes which all started in that same period. He has a job at a tree nursery, and he’s done summer programs at a couple of colleges. He did one at Indiana State University for genetics after Sophomore year, and he took two classes through University of Alabama Early College this past summer. I didn’t think he had a real shot at the super competitive scholarships due to his lack of a lot of leadership activities, so he’s not applying to any super selective schools. On top of that, even if he got in, we couldn’t afford to send him because we would likely not get enough aid. Our EFC is about twice what we can actually afford.
We live in Illinois, and our flagship is a great engineering school - but they want $36K for instate! Ouch!!! No merit money to speak of either. The OOS schools are a much better value for us.
@elodyCOH Interesting that the HH scholarship only requires a 3.0 to keep. It looks like different scholarships have different GPA requirements.
One of the (many) reasons my D19 won’t be applying to UNL is the (in-state) scholarship she’s likely to get requires a 3.5 to keep. She eliminated WSU for that same too-high-GPA reason.
Congrats to your S19! Sounds like a good list of schools with some good merit.
@funding I found the criteria: REVIEW BASIS
A competitive Husker Heritage Scholar demonstrates superior academic potential and has a 32 ACT (or SAT equivalent) and an outstanding high school grade point average or excellent class rank.
Thanks! S has a 34 with strong gpa and AP’s from a competitive HS. Received Beadle but no mention of HH. He has yet to submit Personal Statement document and is not URM. Accepted into Engineering.
@funding I don’t know if my son did a personal statement or not. We are not URM. He does have a lot of AP classes under his belt. He had 7 completed by junior year plus one PLTW engineering class. He has 6 APs and one PLTW this year, so his rigor is about as tough as it gets. That may be why he got it. He got it at the same time as the Beadle.
So far he has taken:
AP Bio
AP Chem
AP Calc BC
AP World History
APUSH
AP Euro
AP Language and Comp
PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science
This year:
AP Physics C
AP Stats
AP Literature and Comp
AP US Gov
AP Macroeconomics
AP Psychology
PLTW Human Body Systems
He is in the top 10% of his high school, and he is a student at a gifted and talented academy.
