I just got my financial aid package from fordham and would love to attend, but I haven't heard anything really about fordham students being happy or loving their school. Does anyone know anything about what the kids do for fun, or what the general consensus of the social scene is? I have heard lots of kids transfer after their freshman year, so that doesn't seem like a good sign....Anything you know about Fordham's social scene in general would be helpful.
p.s. I applied to the Rose Hill campus!

Well, if you have to ask…just kidding.

Fordham kids are hard working, as its primarily an academic school. But there is much to see and do in New York, and Fordham kids all seem to have an active social life. How much social life depends entirely on you. There are all sorts of clubs, groups and activities to join. (Go to the accepted student orientation and you will see them). Some clubs and groups are serious and some are recreational in nature. There are also some outstanding retreats for students up at Fordhams retreat house about 2 hours northwest of Fordham in Goshen at the foothills of the Catskill Mtns. These are spiritual weekends, but they are also a lot of fun and many people have come away from them changed for the better, meeting new (and solid!) friends, reinvigorated in their faith journey. There are a myriad of club sports to join with some “wicked” competition, often between dorms. Soccer and basketball are among the best there. Then there are the Fordham athletic teams to support in whatever sport you enjoy.

There are always going to be party animals, but they typically suffer greatly when grades are handed out, with many of them learning a very hard lesson.

Fordham kids are not nerdsville, but its not state college animal house either.

There are people from different backgrounds, hometowns and interests sufficient for you to find friends. What normally happens is that the creme of the crop rises quickly to the top with grades, and they spend a substantial portion of their time studying…as that is their version of fun. But the most efficient students learn how to balance their time studying, allowing for sufficient social time. (This is true at almost every college.) Its a myth that the best students never have a good time and are locked in the library all the time. Its all about balance and being focused.

As for the transfer question, there are a myriad of reasons that kids transfer. Some because they want to be in more prestigious school (Notre Dame and Georgetown take advantage of this), and some for personal reasons. But every college has this experience. And freshmen, particularly those who are away from home, go through the transfer-itis…typically around Christmas. But the smart ones, hunker down and hang in there, come out the other side when spring comes around and are glad they did.

There are many rewards for sticking it out at Fordham. Some of them are academic, as doors start to open up for the best sophomores. Some kids leave for academic reasons because they are not performing very well and underestimated the workload at Fordham. You just come to Fordham, make your friends, WORK HARD and efficiently and everything will work out very well for you.

Welcome to Fordham.

type: “college review” into google…then click the first link
search:fordham

this should help…look at all the green in that pie chart…compare it to other schools…thats really high approval rating

My daughter - a sophmore is having the time of her life at Fordham - Honestly, I wish I had as much fun!

Hopefully I can help…

First off, Fordham is geared towards making money and it’s Jesuit traditions- NOT fun.

I could go into great detail but basically, if you aren’t from the NY area I would think twice before coming…there are so many jersey/long island ******bags that it’s hard to feel completely at home, though of course it’s possible you’ll find your own group of friends.

Overall I’ve found that while administration can do things right (see U2 @ Fordham), for the most part they don’t give a **** about the happiness of the students- everything is geared toward profit. The cafeteria is a prime example of this…the school would be SO much better if we had half decent food, but Fordham decided it would be better to save a buck on prison-level crap

And I thought I was bitter.

If any Fordham students who dorm were industrious and entrepreneurial, they would organize an illegal buffet with the cheap food their moms send them from New Jersey. Given the cafeteria prices currently in place, they could charge less and still make a profit.

I feel the exact same way as kc^. Probably going to transfer as a result of this.

First, the freshman retention rate is 90% of students, which is significantly higher than the national average.

As a current student at Fordham, its safe to say that we certainly have fun at here, but that fun is not easily defined as it is a frat school. Fordham is located in New York, the capital of the world, yet it also has a vibrant campus life which created a dynamic balance of city outings, and campus club and general Fordham events. Students go to concerts and dance parties at Webster Hall, CD release parties in Brooklyn, the annual masquerade ball at the Metropolitan Museum of Art but still have things going on at campus like Spring Weekend (a huge Fordham festival in the spring), Cinevents (Free movie nights in Keating 1st) or football games. Fordhams social life is unique in that it provides the typical college experience, yet also provides once in a lifetime opportunities that only can be obtained through going to college in New York City. We do also have to study too!
