My older daughter will be living in an off-campus apartment in the Fall, and will need to buy bedroom furniture and a desk for her room. Any suggestions on where to find good quality inexpensive furniture near Cal Poly? We’d consider buying either new or used (or some combination). Is Craigslist a reliable option? How about Target or Costco? She likes IKEA but there isn’t a store nearby and we live out-of-state.

Here is the local Costco address:

Costco
1540 Froom Ranch Way
San Luis Obispo CA 93405-7211
(805) 541-7000

If you like IKEA, then do the easy thing and buy the stuff online and have them ship the furniture. Arrange it so that you and the furniture arrive at the same time. This is probably the easiest thing to do. If want to see the furniture prior to purchase, go to your local IKEA, choose what you want and then have it shipped via the online store.

Otherwise there are many solutions locally.

My son has bought and sold apartment furniture on Craig’s List.

My daughter will also be sharing a house off campus for the first time. The very BEST time to buy secondhand furniture is right as other students are moving out/graduating. Often times they even GIVE it away. So far, she found a nice little desk and computer chair for $20 each in SLO before she left. When she got home she happened to be bike riding and found a full size bed frame for $20. Then she bought a nice dresser for $10 off Craigslist from a student who was goes to UCSC here. Our garage is full! Now she just needs to find a mattress in excellent condition or we might have to buy a cheaper new one. I would check Craigslist. You can find some bargains. Or yard sales. Myself, I wouldn’t buy new furniture unless it’s absolutely a steal. My daughter will be going to grad school, probably back East and won’t need it then.
My daughter and her roommates will still to go in on living room furniture and misc. items, although some of the kids might be bringing some stuff. Good luck!

Thanks for all your great suggestions! Sounds like my daughter should be able to find something on Craigslist, Costco, and/or IKEA, with Craigslist having the best deals. 2Leashes: So your daughter just happened to see a bed frame in someone’s yard? She sounds like quite the bargain shopper! Luckily, the other two girls in my daughter’s apartment already have living room and other misc furniture. I hope this all works out - I just sent off the first month’s rent check!

COparent: Yes, it was the second day she was home for the summer and she and two h.s. friends were riding their bikes down to the beach. Next thing you know, I get a call about this 2-poster bed frame at a yard sale for $20. I drove over and my husband met me with his truck. The man selling it said it had belonged to his mother. Nice, wood frame! And, she found the other stuff on Craigslist in SLO and where we live. All good deals. I’m sure your daughter will find something decent without having to spend too much money! Just keep checking the ads and maybe even drive by a few garage sales.

Craigslist is great, as are garage sales. There are numerous good will/thrift/consignment stores in the area too all of which are decent and I have found great bargains and quality stuff. take some time looking around and don’t be shy to ask locals…we’re very friendly :)

I am big into Craigslist shopping. You can find some great stuff on there… you just have to be persistent and patient because people can be flakey. Also, my friends love consignment shops! They get pretty much all of their belongings from the Salvation Army, Goodwill, antique shops, consignment shops, etc.

Liz, I sent you an email via College Confidential. I hope it went through.:)

Craigslist has some good bargains, but you have to be able to act fast or it’s gone. I inquired about some bedroom furniture, and the guy’s philosophy was ‘first come first serve’. He was anxious to get rid of it and wasn’t going to hold anything for me. Being out-of-state makes it more difficult to check out local garage sales and Craigslist ads and I won’t buy anything sight unseen. Those options seem hit or miss for me.

IKEA has nice affordable furniture, but doesn’t seem to have a very good delivery option. It costs more to ship than the cost of the furniture itself! While looking on Craigslist, we saw ads about discount furniture from a place called Cal Deals Furniture & Mattress on Sueldo St. Has anyone heard of it? My daughter plans to keep her furniture for at least a couple of years and we wouldn’t mind investing in a new set that isn’t terribly expensive.

For college furniture, we found that Walmart has a big selection, decent prices and good delivery- many items qualify for free delivery. I am not a big Walmart fan ( the one in our area is really junky, but I know in some areas they are nicer) but I was really impressed with the selection and especially the delivery service. Craigslist is great and my kids use it a lot, but if you don’t move quickly and also have a car, it can be tough to get good deals.
