I am currently in a highschool program which allows me to take many community college classes (I expect to have about 60 transferable quarter units by the time I graduate, so I think that this should cut out about a year of college.) At this moment, my dream school is UC Santa Barbara, and by the looks of it, I have the GPA/SAT scores to get in fairly easily.

Today, I stumbled upon City Year's website, which brought me back to wondering if taking a gap year would be a good idea. It seems like something that would fit well into my plan. I want to become an author as well as a teacher. For writing, it's best to have many experiences, and with all of the community service hours spent over a year, I would probably be better prepared for the classroom.

However, I'm confused as to how I would indicate this choice, if I were to choose to do it, on my application (or is this something you don't mention until after you're accepted?) Or would I just apply next year?
