Is anybody applying to either one or both of these?

I found their website to be lacking. Does anyone know what the cost would be for out-of-state attendees? Also, how well regarded are the programs at SUNY?

One more: what's the difference between the two programs?

the SUNY program is second to MIT RSI as one of the most prestiigous research programs out there.... i'm applying lol. and it's $1200 to attend if u can't commute (for housing fees), but u get a stipend that's $1000. anyway, the garcia program is more engineering oriented/ physics/ materials science, but the simons program has every field of research (even if it's also a bit materials sci. oriented). I'm not applying to garcia, but i believe that the garcia one is 1200?

I see that the school must first nominate the student. How does this work? Also, is a math teacher absolutely necessary? Can I ask my comp sci teacher instead?

no, i emailed them and they said that the math rec is not absolutely necessary as long as u use some science teacher rec. and also, u can ask the guidance counselor to nominate u-- it's not much of a deal.

I was accepted to the Simons program. I actually found out unofficially from Karen Kernan on Thursday. I’m definitely going and am coming all the way from Texas! Can’t wait

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago about whether or not they received my application in time, and in the reply they mentioned that they hoped to send a response before the end of March.

i am so ****ed at garcia for waitning this long to get back to us. its been almost 2 months and no response? i could have been a CIT at summer camp and i decided to just hope i got in to Garcia and now its too late to apply for anything else. although if i do get in i’m gonna be so excited.

I sent an email yesterday to Ms.Lourdes and her reply was as under-

"Thank you for your application to the Garcia Center Summer Scholars Program. As you can imagine we have received an enormous number of applicants for this program and it would be impossible to accept everyone. Know that your application was considered carefully and that you were a very strong candidate.

We wish you continued luck with your scientific endeavors and hope that you will consider scientific research as a future career path. "

I applied to the Garcia Program and luckily got in. I didn’t get a letter of acceptance or an email, but my research teacher works at the college and found out who got in from my school.
