Hi everybody,
I'm just wondering if some of you guys are having trouble sigining in into the gates millenium scholars website?

If so that means I probably can't get in and need to contact GMS I just really want to get into it cause I want to see of I can speak with other scholars..just to simply get more info concerning the confrence and all.

I was looking through some of the older post that are in this thread and there is something of our workstudy being our "stipend" for living expenses ok I understand how this would work since the GMS scholarship covers loans and workstudy..but here is my question..will the college or university reduce or take away the workstudy when they find out that we have a scholarship this generous? In order words, "Ohh they have this scholarship that gives them the money they would receive under workstudy so they don't need it.." and there goes our stipend. Just something that I started to think about..

Yeah Victor that's what I did. email the HSF at INFO@hsf.net if that doesn't work i'll give u the name and email addy of the girl that has been helping me out

VictorTrejo210 - according to my new Financial Award letter from SNC - which they had to update and send GMS a new copy - my work study was removed. I wondered too now if I was going to have to work for "extra" money - but according to my guy at Gates, the money you would have earned through work-study- is now issued to you in one lump sum at the time of registration --in which case, you are responsible for managing. In fact, here is a direct quote from him:
">...no reason to work unless (you) choose to work. The scholarship

pays for all his expenses, as well as any work study he may be eligible
for (in other words, the scholarship foundation discourages students
from working; rather, it encourages us to focus on school, and school
only)."

My college did the same thing. That's the way it works. They're going to disburse the money to me every quarter.

VictorTrejo210 - Don't get worried. Your Self Help is yours; they can't take that away and expect you to get more. Didn't they lump the loans and work-study awards into one category? like if you received $2,000 in loans and $2,000 in work-study, wasn't there a category on your revised FinAid that added up to $4,000 and said something about outside scholarship?

i won several outside scholarships and my cost if attendance is met and exceeded by about $8000. will they take this money or will i get a refund? i only have scholarships and a university grant and no loans or work study in my award....thanks

Your Gates $ will cover the self-help that you received, the other scholarship $ will go to reducing your university grant. You had to have had some loans or unmet need because that's a qualifier for the GM scholarship. I highly doubt you'd get a refund unless your scholarship money exceeded the cost of your university grant.

This is what happened to me - when I originally applied for Gates, I had simulataneously applied for others, of course. By the time I had received noticed I was a finalist and the request for additional information, including the original award letters - I still hadnt heard from anyone else. AFTER I won the Gates, I also won the Coca Cola Scholars, a Art scholarship and a golf scholarship. So, when GMS requested the most updated Financial Aid Award letter from SNC the other day, they HAD to include the additional funding....which resulted in a lesser amount rewarded from the Gates (by about $1000)SNC also reduced a scholarship they had orignally awarded me. What my FAO did do though, was increased my COA - she included much more in books (to include a laptop), she included travel home (3500K) and then included a "personal expenses". That allowed to use all the monies I received - and still give me "living". In essesence - the other outside monies seemed at first to actually hurt me - but with the help of my COA, we were able to work the numbers into the COA so it really worked out ok. I wondered if I had made a mistake by notifying SNC of the other awards - but it only seemed fair -- the right thing to do since I knew the prupose of the Gates was not "to make me rich" - and I still will have plenty to live on as a result.

Also, 3.97 - If I read this forum right, you just won the Walmart as well, right? Since the deadline for submission of the GMS worksheet is over, seems to me, that money is yours. I am still so freaked out about winning the Gates, I am just trying to keep everything totally up front, --I dont want to do anything to jeopardize anything-- which is why i "told on myself" originally. I have been in constant contact with my GMS person and told her there were still a few scholarships I applied for that wont be notified until this summer. Its tricky though - some scholarships are made out to the institutions only. Gates, on the other hand - is copayable to both you and the institution. What that might mean is that depending on how these come to you - is how you will end up seeing the actual funding. Meaning - you need to have a good relationship with your FAO - Gates puts ALL the power in their hands and how they dispurse it is up to them.

One more thing - I think you will find if you start reading the Gates threads on the gates sites - that MOST of the reciepients have won outside scholarships- why wouldnt they if they were good candidates for Gates, then they would likewise be good for others. Read through them - type it into the search - see how it worked for them.
