It's a really great scholarship.

Hey guys I just received this email from one of the official ladies at GMS:

Dear Victor:

First of all, allow me to welcome you to the GMS Family. The fall leadership will take place in October. Since you are attending a school in Texas, you will be invited to attend the Conference in Los Angeles. GMS will cover all travel and lodging expenses. Additional information about the Leadership conference will be mailed to you in August. Basically, at this point the Gates Millennium Scholars Program provides financial assistant to cover your educational related expenses. I am not sure what other things you have heard GMS recipients receive but the services are as follows:

Selected GMS Scholars can:

Renew their scholarship every year if they meet the eligibility criteria

Request up to two revisions per year if their FA award changes

Have a maximum of one academic year of deferment available

Have the opportunity to be invited to:

Award of Achievement celebrations

Graduate Summer Institute (Junior or Senior levels)

Be a GMS ambassador

You will learn more at the Leadership conference but in the meantime, I suggest that you visit the GMS Scholars website and read the GMS Scholar's Handbook. I understand that you were unable to access the website but I just tried your login information and it seems to be working fine. Please try again by clicking on the following link: http://www2.gmsp.org/scholars/. The user ID and password can be found on the notification letter mailed informing you of your selection as a GMS Scholar. If you do not have the letter, please call me and I would be more than glad to provide you the information over the phone. My direct number is 415-808-2414.

In the future, if you have questions, please contact our office directly at 415-808-2410 or by email at gmsinfo@hsf.net.

Sincerely,

jc

I suggest you guys keep this number in your records, it is a direct number to her office and it would be a lot more convinient to reach GMS. Please keep in mind that this is for scholars that fall under Hispanic Scholarship Fund only.

Victor

As for thefall confrence all of your guys suspisions were correct. EVERYTHING is paid for by GMS and people in the west coast will go to LA, and although she didn't mention where people in the East coast will go to, I am assuming that it is where you guys suspect it will be..in Virginia, I believe. I am also intruiged as to what a GMS ambassador is?

Hope this helps HSF GMS Scholars as well as those that aren't!

Laters,
Victor

Here are some of the people you guys will meet at the conference..and it seems Bill Gates will attend the Virginia confrence in Chantilly..no fair! LOL..I got this from the GMS Scholars website (I was finally able to login):

5/17/2005

2004-2005 GMS Leadership Conference & Alumni Summit: Building a Community of Leaders Photo Gallery.

The Conferences were a tremendous success. Over 898 GMS Scholars attended the Conferences in Chantilly, Virginia and Los Angeles, California including 39 GMS Alumni who took part in the 1st GMS Alumni Summit.

View photos and re-live that memorable weekend when GMS Scholars met BILL GATES SR., Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Dr. Franklyn Chang-Diaz, NASA Astronaut. See Scholars network and learn information about mentoring; navigating your campus for academic success and the GMS funded graduate programs.

We are EXTREMELY fortunate to get this scholarship! In a few months we will be rubbing elbows with some of the country's most distinguished people and for those that will get to meet Bill Gates..I envy you ..LOL just kidding! Still we got one great scholarship!

IF THERE IS ANYONE WHOSE PASSWORD OR USER ID SAYS IT IS INVALID..HERE MAYBE THE SOLUTION...

When you guys received your letters and if you guys changed your USER ID's and PASSWORDS and it said there were sucessful in changing it and after you inputed the USER ID and the PASSWORD it said it was "Invalid" it is because there is a 10 character limit on the USER ID and PASSWORD..in other words..if your user id was billgates210 due to the 10 chracter limit it is: billgates2. If you changed your password to something like :sanantonio210 due to tha 10 character limit it is simply:sanantonio.

Hope this helps!

Victor

WOW Guys! Not only does GMS Pay for what it considers unmet need but, also study abroad! According to the student handbook it says that the cost of the study abroad program must be incorporated into the total cost of attendance and we must be eligible for financial assistance. This scholarship is extremely generous.

oh it wont cover study abroad during the summer though...

they also fund summer tuition if the courses that are going to be studied are required as a part of one's academic course program...however each scholar is responsible for requesting funds.

well at ut i might be doing pre-pharmacy...which is 2 years pre pharm and then after the 2nd year, it's 4 years onto pharmacy school for the Pharm.D. degree....but the thing is, there's no bachelor's degree....i was looking in the scholar handbook and it says the bachelor's has to be delineated for funding purposes....anyone know how it works???? THANKS

that is kind of confusing..and you are right about having to have a bachelor's degree to receive further funding into graduate school..you might want to call them personally and explain the situation to be safe than simply counting on the handbook itself.

Victor

bow down to Victor thank you so much for helping me with my log in problem!

happiest day of my life: I found out gates pay for graduate school in public health! Yay, I can get my MPH for freeeeeeeeeeeee.

did you see this in the handbook?

it's in the bulletin board.

Hey I won the walmart scholarship..yayyyy more money for me!!!!

okay, let's not start boasting now

it's not boasting. it's just sharing good news.

Sorry if I sounded like I was boasting, but who isnt't glad to get free money to go to college? Im sure anyone would want to share the news.
