Okay, so I know that Kenyon's super liberal, but the question for me remains: what is the gay population (for men) there like? In other words, does one exist? I'm not expecting an inordinate amount, like at say Oberlin, but I am hoping, for the purposes of having a love-life, that there is one. I digress... again, so basically gay people, are there any?

so i watched these videos by this girl named Becca Roth… (i think that’s her name)
where she explores dating life at Kenyon. She talks to a gay couple.
They were really honest about what life was like.
Kenyon IS rather small and the pool of which to choose from is limited.
Anyways…
I don’t have the link, but I’m pretty sure if you search Kenyon College on youtube it’ll come up.

Thanks so much for responding!!! I may or may not have see that video, haha (I’ve done my research). I’m just curious as to how representative of the school that video is. My hope is just that there are more lovely gay men floating about on the Kenyon Hill.

What qualifies as “inordinate?” Actually, there is no evidence that I’ve seen that Oberlin has an “inordinate” number of gay men (or women), versus Kenyon, Grinnell, Carleton, Macalester, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, or any other progressive LAC. I think campuses might differ in how comfortable students feel about everyone knowing their sexual orientation. To that extent, Oberlin might be slightly different than Kenyon. It might be more open. But in terms of numbers? There is no way to accurately determine whether one school has more homosexuals than another. Just sayin’.

Ummmm, I wasn’t trying to really make a statement, I was just trying to ask a simple question. I’m sorry if you took offense… If you have any useful information you can let me know… awkward.

Question7, I take no offense. I am providing useful information, in response to the following statement, your words: “I’m not expecting an inordinate amount, like at say Oberlin.” What is an inordinate amount and how do you know if Oberlin has an inordinate amount? It’s impossible to know, is what I said. It can only be a matter of perception. There isn’t a college in the country even capable of publishing the percentage of gay men or lesbians, the same way they do for whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, men, and women. They can’t publish such a number because they honestly don’t know.

Be comforted that you will find gay men at both colleges, most likely in equal proportions. It may be that more gay men are “out” at Oberlin, not that there are more gay men at that college. An environment more conducive to being “out” may have given you the perception that the number of gay men at Oberlin is larger, but there is zero evidence of that.

Hey Question 7,

you should know my sister goes to Kenyon and is a lesbian and has a girlfriend there. they’ve been dating openly amongst their straight Kenyon friends for quite some time now. my sister says she knows of a couple openly gay guys there, and my high s. guidance counselor originally suggested Kenyon to me as being a good reach school and she knew when making this suggestion that i am, ironically enough, gay as well.

kenyon students are supposed to be pretty open-minded. there are some racist & homophobic people there, but they are not extremely of either, according to my sis. on the whole it’s socially liberal but not extremely so like Oberlin is. you should be fine if you choose to go there, is basically my bottom line.

now if this was denison u., college of wooster, or ohio wesleyan, well then it could br a bit harder at first to break in.

well good luck w/ everything! my last advice to offer, go to Kenyon instead of Oberlin. Oberlin is just too radical, at least for me anyways. also KNOW THIS, both colleges are gay-accepting but their outside surrounding environments are not for the most part. ohio is pretty socially conservative overall, so you might want to consider macalester and carleton as well : )
