Hi! I’m excited to be joining the Kenyon class of '22! I am wondering what the LGBT+ situation is like on campus. I met with a few people from the college who said that it is an accepting place and that there is an LGBT+ presence on campus. I was told that being gay on campus was not a problem. The few gay students I’ve spoken to assured me that I will be able live openly. I went online and read about Kenyon’s LGBT+ resources as well, but most of the posts are outdated-from last year or before. I have a growing concern that the college is less LGBT+ friendly than advertised. Does anyone have any insight about life as an LGBT+ student? Is my concern unreasonable? Thanks.
My D’s best friend from HS just graduated from Kenyon last year. She is a lesbian, and found a very supportive community (and people to date) there. I think it has become pretty mainstream there (as at many colleges), which may be why there are fewer posts.
Our awesome tour guide was gay. He was constantly mentioning LGBT+ organizations and other aspects of LGBT+ life on campus. After the tour, we went to a presentation where he and a few other students talked about their Kenyon experiences. He made a point of saying that when he guides tours, he always talks a lot about LGBT+ life at Kenyon, so that a kid who is not out to his/her parents can get the answer to questions that he/she might not feel comfortable asking openly. I thought that was so thoughtful and touching. He was such a great guide - a big part of why my son (who is straight, to my knowledge) found Kenyon so appealing. And clearly the administration is supportive, as he and his message was front and center throughout our visit …
