Gen eds

Can anyone give me a general idea of how many credits a typical MT program would have that requires less gen Ed classes? Like what’s considered a lot of credits in your major etc, I’m really getting confused by looking at cirriculum at schools.

My D was accepted at Syracuse for MT- would have had 1 gen Ed a semester - most of which would have been taken care of by her ap credits.

My son had two gen eds freshman year and his AP credits took care of the rest. He’s at CCPA Roosevelt.

In most BFA MT programs 70% - 90% of your required credits will be in the major, and 10% - 30% of your required credits will be outside of the major. Some of those credits outside of the major may sometimes be satisfied by AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment credits. But, this will vary from school of school.

Typical Gen Ed requirements for a BFA in MT are 30-44 hours. Some go up to 50 and more if a foreign language is required and the student is not able to place out of introductory language classes. Some are less than 30.

Here are some examples:

Carnegie-Mellon 20 (estimated @ 3 CMU credits per conventional semester hour)
Catholic U 30
Coastal Carolina 34-41
East Carolina 42
Elon 56-60
Emerson College 56
Florida State 36
Ithaca College 17-21 (apparently many Gen Ed requirements met by Theatre coursework)
Long Island Post 41
Molloy/CAP21 44
Montclair State 22
NYU Tisch 32
NYU Steinhardt 44
Pace 44
Penn State 41-45
Rider 33
SUNY Buffalo 31
Syracuse 30
U Central Florida 36
U Miami 21-30
Western Carolina 42
Western Michigan 38

Hours in the major are usually in the range of 70-90 for a BFA, but some require only 50-60 and there are probably some with over 90 hours required.

If a student is able to pass some AP tests, then credit can be obtained to reduce the Gen Ed amount, sometimes considerably. Some schools give 6 hours credit for a 4 or 5, particularly in American History. My d received 23 hours of AP credit, reducing her Gen Ed requirements significantly (however, she is really interested in taking courses beyond her minimum requirement).

One thing to take a look at - some BFA programs require a fairly high number of stagecraft and theatre history courses, 18-21 hours or more, while others require only 9-12 hours. A curriculum with a significant number of non-performance related theatre courses may or may not be of interest to various students.

@EmsDad thanks so much for posting that info. That gives me an idea of what to look at and compare to with different programs. Wow there are really a lot of differences in required credits. My D wants as few gen eds like math/science as possible but in BA Theatre/MT concentration programs it looks like that will be hard to avoid. We have BFAs on our list too but those too it looks like tend to require the dreaded math class… lol

Most accredited colleges require at least one math and one science course. No doubt there are some exceptions, but it is hard to avoid taking ANY math or science. Most schools offer some sort of “checkbook math” classes and “kitchen chemistry” courses for liberal arts students (as we engineering students used to refer to them).

I always recommend ap stats in HS - satisfied math requirement (if there was one) for all schools on D’s list

No math requirement for BFA students at Otterbein. Son has one non-major class per semester.

Thanks @toowonderful that’s a good tip. Not sure if D school offers AP stats . I think only honors stats

Both of my kids were excellent math students and accelerated in math throughout their K-12 schooling. However, neither had a desire to take math in college. Neither took any math in college. D1 went to Brown. It has an open curriculum. You can take whatever subjects you want! She did have TWO years of AP Calculus in high school and was able to use those credits in applying to graduate schools in architecture which required two college level math classes and so she used the HS ones for that application requirement. D2 got a BFA at NYU/Tisch. NYU/Tisch has very broadly defined distribution requirements, which includes two courses in the “sciences.” D2 took a course in political science and a course in sociology and both of those counted as “sciences” at NYU!

This list is not correct for Montclair unless perhaps you kill off some gen eds with AP credits. 30 credits is the right number I believe, though some can be theater-related. Two semesters of a language are required (sign language included), but no math or science for BFA’s. I WISH they made them take a checkbook/taxes/savingforretirement/howtoliveonanactor’sbudget/youdon’tneedtobuyeverythingatSephoraandAmericanApparel math class!! $-)

Because once was not enough.

:))

There’s no math requirement at UArts. Science, yes, but no math… Science includes broad, arts-related choices. Students may choose to take more traditional science courses at nearby College of Sciences, which has a reciprocal program with UArts.

UArts requires 8 gen ed courses, many of which are directly related to the arts. In fact, all courses at UArts tie into the arts.

My D, an excellent student, vehemently did not want math at all, either, lol! She closely looked at each school’s gen ed requirements and options on top of the requirements in the major.

CCPA-Roosevelt BFA requires one gen ed per semester, does not require any of them to be math or science.
My D happens to love math, so is looking into taking some basic accounting courses (hopefully SephoraandAmericanApparel management will be covered!)

@Calliene - I got the 22 hour number for Montclair from this page on their website, which seems to total 22 hours for BFA Fine Arts majors (they are exempted from many of the standard requirements):

It can be hard to actually figure out what the details of the requirements are for any of these programs without seeing an actual degree plan.

It is hard to figure even when you.can see the plan so I can understand the confusion leading to the creation of this thread. Even a school like Tisch with a relatively high number of geneds you can’t easily know that you can satisfy virtually all of them with a class that has the word “theatre” in it somewhere. (Which is not saying that I recommend NYU for someone looking to avoid geneds… I wouldn’t necessarily).

Agree with @halflokum. At CCM Music Theory satisfies the math requirement that the university requires.

I found that the best way to get answers to most of these types of questions is to call or email each individual school, and make spreadsheets. It’s time consuming, but it is the only way to get accurate info for comparisons. No two schools/programs are alike. We can give you great general advice and info, but on specifics like exactlyehich classes are required, it is always best to contact the schools directly.

@EmsDad, yes, those are gen ed requirements specific to BFA’s, but there are a few courses required of everyone that if you go back further in the undergraduate requirements you’ll see, specifically the language requirement and the “World Cultures” requirement (which can be fulfilled by “World Dance”) or some such thing. We made the same mistake when we first looked at it!! It can be confusing, but you are so good to research and make all these lists. ^:)^
