First off, I would like to say how happy I am that I could find a site like this that can help students make decisions and with difficult topics

A little about me: I am a sophmore (Black, male, 14) at Paxon School for Advanced Studies in Jackosnville Florida. It is my first year at a public school, besides 4-5 grade becase I have attended DoD( Department of Defence, military) schools my whole life.

Current GPA: 3.7/3.9 (unweighted/weighted)

Please judge my previous, current, and, hopefully, future schedules. Be harsh if you must:

Would It be unwise to take Calc AB without BC during high school?

Do you think I could handle the load of 8 AP courses?

I have no in-school Extra-curriculars so far (NONE!) and dont play sports. I do, however, have cummunity service hours. Would it look bad if I suddenly started clubs in my 11th-12th grade year?

I know its a lot but please reply, ive seen some excellent replies here :-)

I take it you are a junior now and enrolled in those 11th grade courses? The biggest thing I see missing is 3 or 4 years of foreign language. You didn't say what kind of college you want, but most selective ones require this. This is much more meaningful than AP Psyc, which is not really very important.

Now I read you are a sophmore, but how do you know what grades you have gotten already? Don't list PE type classes, they don't go toward your GPA and just make more work for people to read through. Same with most other non-academic classes.

Your 10th grade value courses are Span I, Eng, Alg II, Chem. I don't see why you are taking Chem, if you plan to retake it in AP form next year--that is redundant. it is best to have Chem, Physics and Bio, 2nd best to have AP or Hon in these.

AP-MEH is much easier than AP-USH, so plan to take AP-MEH first.

Don't worry about your sr year schedule, you'll figure that out next year. do worry about pre-req's, but it's too soon to tell what schedule you will hack. Usually Jr year is crunch year.

So sorry about the confusing post. Ive changed the schedule to whittle down the reading to the most impt. and have added on the Spanish courses I left out. In response to your point about Chem/AP Chem, Its a Pre-req for chem. about having the grades already, those are as of the 2nd marking period. APUSH is a requirement at my school, and it doesnt offer MEH sadly. Thankyou for the quick reply and I hope this helps!

Hi--I strongly recommend that you DO get involved in clubs/organizations even if you are starting in junior year. National Honor Society usually kicks in about junior year, and perhaps you could be an officer. Holding leadership roles is viewed as important by colleges. And if you are into community service, many high schools have community service clubs, so you would be serving the community and being part of a HS extra-curricular too. If you are interested in getting into top schools, then go out for the "It's Academic" team (or your equivalent there), the Math Team, the debate team, etc. I am a parent of a very successful college freshman (Nat'l Merit Finalist, just started at Carnegie Mellon) and this advice is based on my extensive research and experience having 2 offspring go through the process... Good luck!

You seem on the right track. I concur with the advice that you should get involved in extra curricular activities: these can be sports, community service, academic clubs, arts (music, drama, and such) , or a combination of those. Working at paying jobs is also considered an extra-curricular activity.

Someone else bumped an old high school class thread, and HarryJones commented about it being old, so I figured I’d find an older one. Incidentally, this was the last thread in HSL.
