George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship at Iowa State

Who's applying to this program? Does anybody know if it's super selective or what not because I made 3 grammar mistakes on my essays and I don't know if that will ruin my chances...

I didn’t apply, but a girl at my school went. She’s pretty smart – AP/Honors classes, but not like a genius or anything, and I don’t think her ECs are too significant. She seemed to like it! Sorry if that doesn’t help much…

I applied, and from what I have heard, it is very selective. Apparently every year around 100 people apply and only 20ish get in. Hopefully they’ll be able to look over your mistakes. Good luck, and maybe I’ll see you there. Are you a high school student or an undergraduate student?

@viratsbiwi I didn’t know it was that selective! Thanks for the input. I’m a high school junior, how about you?

@viratsbiwi and do you mean 20 all together as in both high school and undergraduate? Or 20 for both?

@engineering2015 what I had said earlier about the selectivity of the program was incorrect. Apparently in 2011, they only took 5 high school students. I am a high school senior. It seems as if the program is geared towards undergrad students. Are you from Iowa?

@viratsbiwi no, I’m from Illinois so not too far away. How about you? Hopefully they select more than 5 this year

@engineering2015 I’m hoping so too! And I’m from Iowa, I am actually attending Iowa State this fall.

Also, when do you think we’re going to hear from them? I would love to by April 1st, but looking at previous years, we won’t know until mid-April? I applied for the program last year, and didn’t get in. I unfortunately did not get a reply of my admission notification until May 4th. This will be a long wait.

Yeah, I don’t think we’ll know until mid-late April :frowning: But good luck! You seem like a good candidate.

Wish it was April already! Super nervous about this one, since I was alternate-d for RSI and all of my hopes have been dashed :frowning: But I did mention that my parents were both alumni at Iowa State… Maybe that will help? eh?

@anniesunshine wow! Getting alternated for RSI is still a big accomplishment! You definitely have a great chance at getting this GWC internship.

And what did you all write about for your essays?

@engineering2015 Thanks! For the first one, I wrote about my experiences working in a research laboratory this school year, and the second one I wrote about life as a Chinese-American. Did you apply as well?

@anniesunshine Yeah I applied. For the first one I wrote about an internship I had at a national science lab last summer and for the second one I wrote about racial stereotypes shaping diversity students’ identities. What did you write about for the 3rd one?

The only thing that I’ve got going for me is that I’m going to Iowa State next fall and I’ll be in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I have no prior lab experience whatsoever.

April is approaching! I’m so scared. :</p>

I e-mailed someone at ISU and asked when we’ll be hearing back from them, I got this in response,

“Applications are under review now. You will be notified of our decision no later than April 15.”

So basically, they better be on our way!

@viratsbiwi Yay! It’s exciting yet nerve-racking. Do you think they’ll notify the accepted people first? Also please post your decision once you find out!

They’ll most likely notify the accepted people first because the professor will contact the student that they’ll be working with. I definitely will, you should post yours too!

@viratsbiwi You said you applied last year right? When you received your decision email did they say how competitive this internship is? I just got rejected to BoA Student Leaders so if I don’t get this GWC internship (I probably will get rejected) I’m screwed :’(

This is what they said last year,

“Thank you so very much for taking time to apply to the George Washington Carver Summer Internship Program at Iowa State University (ISU). Please accept our apology in our delay in notifying you about the selections. Unfortunately we are unable to offer you a position in the program. We received an overwhelming number of qualified applicants this year. Due to limited resources spaces were restricted. The mentors and review committee spent a tremendous amount of time making these difficult decisions.”

But every program says this for every single rejection, it was obviously a generic response. I have no idea who will get in and who won’t. It’s April 6th today, hopefully we’ll be hearing from them soon!
