GWC Internship @ Iowa State 2013

Is anyone applying for the George Washington Carver Internship Program? Are there any past attendees who can share their experience at GWC? How does it compare to other research programs?

The projects listed on the website do seem interesting! But there are only 15 projects, for both high school + undergraduate students... Do multiple students work on each project?

I am too, but I’m a high school student. I’m not too sure how it works, but it seems like there will be multiple people working on a project.
Can I ask where are you from?

I applied too as a graduating senior. Do you know when we hear back from them?

Not sure…I would expect mid april, hopefully sooner!

What projects are you interested in?

Do you have to be a minority group to get in?

I’m a graduating senior from CA.

I wish the website was a bit more detailed… Anyone know if room & board is free? Or do we have to pay for that out of the $1500 stipend?

Also, for references - No one’s references have been contacted yet, right? I’m wondering if everyone’s references will be contacted, and if so, approximately when.

My last name happens to be the same as one of the researcher’s on the list so I choose his as my #1. =D Otherwise, I’m really interested in the animal related projects. I kinda hate plants so…

From what I read, I think room and board is free in addition to the stipend.

Previous years’ threads have said that references don’t actually get contacted.

Interesting way to choose xD

I don’t know how legit this program really is… How can they select the applicants with the most potential if all they look at are two very short essays, which aren’t even related to research? No transcripts or test scores, no “Why do you want to do research?” question, no letters of rec… Then, it seems like it’s basically based off of ethnicity and writing ability.

Yeah I did see that in the 2011 thread people said their references didn’t mention being contacted. What’s the point of asking for references though?
I wonder if I can not tell my two references that I listed them on my app… I feel like I’ve already bothered them enough with LoR requests.

Btw, is GWC your main option for this summer or a backup program? This is probably the only ‘free’ summer I’ll have, right before leaving for college, so I don’t know if I should get some more research experience or go on vacation instead, or just spend time with friends at home. I mean, what is there to do in Ames, Iowa?

I wouldn’t consider this my backup program. I’ve really just stumbled upon it and wanted to apply. I’ve applied to a few other programs, so I’m just waiting to hopefully hear from one! :)

What were your first three choices for the projects?

Hey guys the application does not state the deadline time to submit, so does it automatically mean that it is set at the end of the day on EST?

I sent it at 8:30 PST just in case. I’m not sure if it’s still open. :(

I ended up not applying, even though the projects all sound really cool and I’d love to work on them. If only it was in CA…

@romeonachos, I’m just curious, which projects did you choose?

Good luck to everyone who applied! (:

A lot were really interesting!

I chose Impacts of Viruses and Nutrition on Honey Bee Health, Significance of Sex Determination in Turtles, and Simulating Wasp Queen Interactions With Larvae.

And I totally agree! The stipend wad definitely an incentive though.

Nice~ Hope you get in!

Thank you! :)

With this internship and the one in Wyoming and another in rural Ohio, I’ve already resigned myself to a summer in the middle of no where.

Now if only I could get myself into a college with an urban campus…

I think it’ll be a change! If I get in I’ll be super excited. I mean, I can say I’ve been to Iowa. :D

I applied
rising senior in CA

nayhayyy me too!

So… Its April 3rd. We were technically supposed hear back by the 1st… Anyone get any news?
