George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship at Iowa State

@viratsbiwi thanks for the info! I have a feeling that I’m going to get rejected. I had no idea it was so selective when I applied. Do you mind posting your stats? I don’t know if I’m underqualified. If you don’t want to I totally understand though!

You’re welcome! Don’t worry, I have the same feeling too. This internship isn’t completely based on merit, which is why stats may be a little irrelevant. But I will post them anyway. My ACT score is 26, and my weighted GPA is 3.2, unweighted is 3.1. Honestly I do believe that I am under qualified academically, but my extra curriculars make me a better candidate, or at least I would like the believe that.

@viratsbiwi what are your extracurriculars? I’m kind of in the opposite situation as you. I have really good grades but my extracurriculars (like track and field, peer tutoring, volunteering, etc.) are not relative to science research. And did you send your act scores? It said it was optional so I didn’t.

None of my extra curriculars are science related at all, but I do feel like I am well rounded in the exte curricular area. I am in Academic Decathalon, speech, dance, swimming, volunteering, Iowa Youth Congress (We’re basically a youth advocation group that lobbies for causes that we think are important to the youth), and I am the president of Asian Cultures Club.

It sounds like you’re really strong in the leadership/extracurricular area. Have you gotten a decision yet?

I have not! Have you?

@viratsbiwi no. Idk if that’s a bad thing

I mean, we do have until April 15th. Should we ask someone again?

@viratsbiwi Idk. I feel like when they say “no later than April 15” that means the rejected people will know by then, but the accepted people usually get notified earlier…

Didn’t get in. :frowning:

@viratsbiwi neither did I :’( I thought I had a pretty good chance at this one… Well there goes my summer

Didn’t get in either… I thought I was pretty well qualified too! I’ve been researching in a lab since September, 4.0 GPA, and my parents were both Iowa State alumni. I guess they preferred graduates over high schoolers…

How do you guys know? Did you get an email?

I didn’t get an email yet, so does that mean I probably got accepted?
Thanks in advance

We received an email. The professors usually contact the accepted students before they contact the other students. I wouldn’t assume that you got accepted. I would contact the program coordinator before to confirm.

Thanks. I emailed tncooper@iastate.edu a few minutes ago. I am just really worried because I did not receive a response on my application yet.

I was doing some research, and apparently last year there were 13 high school students chosen… I wonder how many they picked this year.

I got an email response. Here it is.

Hi Rahul,

Your letter went out on April 10. Thank you so very much for taking time to apply to the George Washington Carver Summer Internship Program at Iowa State University (ISU). Unfortunately we are unable to offer you an internship position in the program. Due to limited resources, we are only able to offer 27 internship positions this summer. We had over 140 applications for these position. The mentors and review committee spent a tremendous amount of time making these difficult decisions.

I want to personally commend you on seeking research opportunities to expand your scientific and practical knowledge. I would encourage you to consider applying to the George Washington Carver Summer Internship Program next year.

Dr. Cooper

It says 27 internship positions, so I guess there are even fewer high school positions.

@ryerra are you a junior or a senior?
