Georgetown 2023 Applicants Discussion

you can call

@MA yes I did as well.

I have not researched every single college in this country, but I have yet to come across one, but I know Georgetown is not an exception. I will be happy to be told exceptions to the rule. @collegemomjam

These may be that same work study students who answer the phone and tell people that they will be rescinded if they don’t take the AP exams listed as senior year on the app. (Before everyone freaks out, the story is true, but the policy of rescinding for not taking an AP exam is not). So consider the source, and if the answer runs contrary to your gut (or what most sites say) call the next day and rephrase the question slightly.

Yes, there are many things that “cannot hurt” and maybe finances are not an issue for the kids at this HS, but It is unforgivable for a GC not to be aware that the CB charges for everything.

Deferred to NHS
33 ACT UW 3.75

Registered for informed mail. The envelope will be delivered today in Florida. The postage is the lower .47. Bit concerned. Seems @MA and @Matt10121 both received acceptance letters at the lower .47 postage? Please reaffirm if you don’t mind. Also if anyone else received acceptance at the lower postage please chime in. I’ll know soon enough but trying to keep my chin up! Fingers crossed!

@hoyasaxa23 did you call? or has anyone else??

I called for my admissions decision.

They ask for your name and DOB.

I was deferred.

@skieurope and anyone else interested. I was curious so I called Harvard and Cornell regarding the sending of AP Scores.

Harvard now accepts self reported everything so that answers that.

Cornell, on the other hand, said that if you want your AP scores considered as part of the review of your application (meaning if they are good and you want them considered), then they would require the official reports from College Board. I got this information from the woman that answered the phone (you go through quite few prompts there, however, it’s not like she just picked up). She seemed quite informed.

I think the point is that this may vary by school. The norm is definitely that most people don’t send official scores. However, if you have strong scores and you want to make sure they are considered, you may want to find out if they want the official reports. I think most schools won’t and will accept self reported, but a lot of kids that follow these threads are aiming really high and have vested a lot into their high school experiences and applications. It might be worth the five minutes to clarify…

I also called Georgetown. According to the woman that answered the phone (and they are quite busy today so keep that in mind), if you want your scores considered they should be reported from either the counselor or College Board. I specifically said" so you wouldn’t accept self reported to be considered as part of the application?" and she said “no”.

No one should take my word for it with something this important. Try to call yourselves, or better yet, email your admissions rep so you have a more reliable answer in writing.

Even back in the day, Harvard never required the score report. And I know for a fact that this is an example of a college where the score report bypasses the admissions office.

She apparently is not informed by what they say on their website:

https://admissions.cornell.edu/standardized-testing-requirements

I’m not arguing with @collegemomjam , but I do wish these admissions offices would get their act together. I’ve moderated the Cornell board for 4 admissions cycles now, and I cannot recall any instance of an applicant having being told that. :open_mouth:

That said, I’m also of the opinion that AP scores carry little, if any, weight in the admissions decisions.

I got deffered. 1390 sat. sat subject tests in the upper 600’s. lots of extracurricular and leadership experience. world leadership congress alum.

@skieurope so what you quoted Cornell as saying is that they do wish that you report them, no? Isn’t that what that quote is saying?? It says “…but we do ask that you report them if taken”…they just won’t be used for subject test requirements.

I think the important take away here is that there is a lot of good, well intentioned advice given on these boards. But everyone should always verify for themselves any important information that is shared as it relates to their own individual applications because there are always exceptions and different contexts to consider.

They make, IMO, distinctions between required and not required. The next line to the quote was “All required scores must be officially reported to Cornell from the testing agency by our application deadline.” Since AP scores are not required, neither is an official report.

Agreed.

I think that’s exactly what’s confusing about the whole AP scores sending thing…and it’s an example of making sure you ask the question the right way. Because sending AP scores aren’t “required”, it’s easy to assume (in many cases, rightfully) that it’s not worth sending them officially. But when you ask the question differently “If I want my AP Scores considered as part of my application do I need to have them sent officially or can I self report them?” you might get a different answer.

Personally calling or emailing to verify is the way to go.

I checked informed delivery and it will be here today in MO. I have the lower 47 but I won’t lose hope!

@anniek360

I’m an applicant from last year: lower postage value indicates less weight and less paper which means deferral. Georgetown does not reject anyone for EA. They put everyone who wasn’t accepted into the RD pool.

Higher postage value indicates more weight and more pieces of paper → Acceptance.
