Georgetown Dorms

I am starting to get a bad feeling about the dorms, like there is a reputation for them being s h i t t y. Someone at school today said they had spent a few nigths in a dorm around five years ago, and it was a complete dump. I think she might have been in new south before its renovation. Anyway, I'm worried as you can see.

I have a friend who went to a camp there last summer and tells me the same thing everytime we talk about colleges...

i went to nylf at Georgetown two years ago, and I stayed at Village C, which people have said were supposed to be crappy, but i actually thought they were nice...they have a bathroom, 2 beds, desk, dressers...and the common room is pretty nice i guess, some old couches and stuff, but i can't imagine that other colleges are going to be a lot better or anything...new south looks REALLY NICE (at leas the outside does)...don't worry about it too much, i mean, don't let a freshman dorm room scare you away from any college

I'm hoping for Village C, as it is newest, private bathrooms, etc. I'm surprised you would say they older building looks nice.

village c is nice, i would be perfectly happy to live there(private bathrooms especially for), i was just syaing they have some new buildings there that look really nice

New South just got completely redone... I wonder how it is.

Have any current Gtown students been into the NEW New South yet? How is it?

new south is v nice
village c is old, and crappy/ pvt bathrooms arent too great. rooms are v small.
harbin is undoubtedly the best dorm. very nice and cozy. rooms are HUGE. best location as well.
darnall is a dump as well..run down...and very very very far away.
1)harbin
2)new south
3) village c
4)darnall
ps. i live in harbin

Harbin would be my #1 choice... it sounds very cool.

yes, harbin is definitely the best dorm..the bathrooms are very nice..and you get to know all the people on your floor. the cluster system is very pragmatic. new south is like a hotel...so if people are playing loud music..you can hear it well down the hallway. i would describe village C as kinda dingy as well. new south does have wireless internet access though...and its right next to the library AND the cafeteria. if you want you can also apply to special interest housing..and room in the quad...ie mccarthy and reynolds, or kennedy. they are like brand new (2 years old) and very nice.

if you have any questions about ANYTHING hit me up...i am more than willing to help people out...i remember last year college confidential helped me a LOT

Do you get randomly placed in any residence hall? Or can you choose? And if you can choose, what is the process for choosing a dorm hall?

How can village C be dingy if it is so much newer than the others though? Please enlighten us.

i do not know about it being newer. if it is, it certainly doesnt look it. but it is certainly kinda dingy...and it smells as well. old furnitute, ubcarpeted floors, run down elevators....personally i dont like it at all. however some people do want it coz of the pvt bathrooom, but the bathroom is not too great, plus it makes the room very small.
and yes, you are randomly placed into rez halls, but you can mention your preferences, and cite your reasons. this is in your housing qeustionnaire.

My daughter got stuck in Darnall but after all the angst she really likes it! They are away from the other residence halls but they are closer to all the classes, have their own cafeteria so it is more like a close knit group eating together every night, the GUTS bus stops right outside their door and no hills to climb! The views of DC are spectacular - she can see the Kennedy Center and across the Potomac from her window and at the other end of the hall you can see the National Cathedral. As a parent I thought it was cool but not sure if teenagers would appreciate it! LOL
She does agree that Harbin is by far the best though but was happy she didn't get in Village C.
Darnall was not supposed to be a freshman dorm but they had so many freshman last year they put the overflow into Darnall. It is dirty (mom's opinion) but she was very creative in her room arrangement and fit lots of stuff in her room and is not overflowing. Essentially the location is great!

Hmmm, random placement; what would be a good reason for listing Harbin? Or any preference for that matter? That is, if we have a preference for Harbin, what would be a good reason? That we enjoy the cluster system?

I visited Georgetown over Christmas break. They've renovated most, if not all of the dorms in the past five years.

My standards are significantly lower then the average person's, so I'm not particularly worried. I'm a pretty flexible gal..but then again, I think airplane food is DELISH! so I'm not the best judge at all.

Yeah, air plane food is not that bad; I fly Singapore Airlines and their food is awesome, even in economy.

Just for some perspective, I used to go to Pepperdine University out in Malibu. We were listed as #1 for "Dorms Like Palaces" in Princeton Review, but I have no idea where they got that from. They were dorms. There were rooms, beds, desks. Pretty much every campus is going to be alike. Some surely are crappier than others, but I think stressing over Georgetown's dorms is a bit much. After a week you'll forget about it - it's your new home.

Harbin has a cemetry next to it...I would be freaked out if I had to live there
