Georgetown SFS EA (and others RD, if not)

Ethnicity: White
Location: New Jersey
Gender: Male

I attend a rigorous college prep school outside of New York City. We send 100 percent of our students to college, and the curriculum is definitely much more difficult than your average high school. Don't mean to sound rude, just throwing that out there.

GPA: 3.45 UW, school doesn't do weighted, inflation of any kind.
* If you recalculate my GPA, subtracting some visual arts courses which I was required to take but could not excel in and got B-'s in, I actually have a GPA more like 3.5.

The SAT'S: 760 CR, 580 M, 720 W
Sat II's: US History-780 Lit-660
ACT: 32 (Prospective, based on practice tests, etc, lets assume)

Class Rank: N/A, school doesn't rank, but, a look at a slightly confusing GPA distribution graph would put me at least in the top 20, if not higher.

I am planning to take what my school calls 'Focus', a year long research project/thesis in something you love. I hope to tackle an aspect of politics and the media, and it would involve writing a 25 page paper first semester and then going out into the field and actually working in that area before presenting this project to a panel of experts.

EC's:
--Student Government (My strongest point):
- President of the Student Body, running uncontested, first time in school history.
- I was the vice-president of the Student Body junior year.
- I was the president of my grade for Freshman and Sophomore year.

I've helped initiate major rule changes, written and delivered big speeches, argued in front of faculty meetings, and been a general advocate for the Student Body.

-I interned for the Barack Obama for President campaign in Paterson, NJ, compiling over 125 hours of service. I was an assistant to the field organizer, and helped run the office, train volunteers, set up and take down events, etc. I was also left in charge of phone banks and canvassing events and helped volunteers sometimes 3 times my age understand how to be a part of the campaign. I was one of four field office administrators in Paterson on Election Day, the only one who happened to be a minor. Great letter of rec from one of my supervisors/field managers. Will also be a focus of my essay.

-National/International Editor of the school newspaper: written extensively on American politics, edited articles, managed lay out of section.

-Play guitar in private lessons, school band, the pit orchestra for the musicals, and small cafes and restaurants.

I am potentially working in the local assembly persons office as well this summer.

I am a tour guide for my school, all four years.

I've run cross country all four years of high school, varsity for three.

My US AP History teacher will be writing my recommendation, and he is also the main faculty adviser to the student government, so he has a double perspective on me.

I don't know how to explain it, but I have become a sort of natural leader at my school I think any interviews would go well. You guys probably get this a lot, but I feel like my numbers (not a great sophomore year, more B's than A's), and my struggles with SAT I Math are bogging me down from being a really good candidate.

I know my numbers are low, but its just up my alley interest wise and a reach for anybody, so I thought I'd ask.

Other schools: George Washington, American, Boston University, Tufts, UChicago, Wash U STL, NYU

anyone???

I would say your EC look very good, but your GPA is not up to par. Your SATs are pretty average. You should pull your grades up for better chances to get in.

Reach. Your GPA and SATs are not up to par.

Math is usually considered the “easiest” SAT score to raise because it’s based almost entirely on practice and knowledge of the test. American and Boston are matches but GW, Tufts, NYU, Chicago, and Georgetown are all varying levels of reaches.

I know it’s a bit out of range numbers wise, but honestly, it’s a dream of mine I’ve only recently found the true strength to committ myself to. I’ll work hard on my essays and apps and if it doesn’t work, hell, I guess I’ll have to pull off a 4.0 elsewhere and transfer.

Any other thoughts?

Any other thoughts? It’s a reach but a dream of mine and if I have to work hard elsewhere and transfer, maybe that’s the way.

no shot at the last four. LOL “not to sound like a conceited ^$$hole, but i think im the shizzle.”

…fail with that attitude and a 580 on math

I think you should apply early action. At worst you would be deferred into the regular decision application pool so you’d basically have 2 shots that year! I also read a statistic on Georgetown’s site which said that roughly 18% of the EA applicants who get deferred, end up getting accepted during the regular pool.

You have great extracurriculars, and although your scores and GPA may not be up to par, it sort of is. Your from a competitive private school so they’ll realize that your school’s GPA standards is different from public schools. Just write essays that voice who you are, and give it a shot. It’s definitely possible, and you won’t know until you try. At worst, you can apply as a transfer the next year.

Good luck! :)

~ Theos

I know my GPA is low, but it has taken the experience of finding out what it would take to get to my goals to recently try and improve it.

I guess one could go elsewhere, work hard, and try to transfer.

SAT and GPA are too low but you if you could raise your SAT some and get your GPA up then you have a shot. (Since you like politics you could go to American and probably get in)

Possibly b/c of good EC

Boston University is a safety they have a 55% acceptance rate and your GPA is in the median your sats are above the median

dont be freaked out, but we might be the same person.

our stats are so similar it is quite eerie.
