Georgia State vs Georgia Southern

I hope to get into UGA or FSU, but I need backups too. I visited Southern, and liked the campus, but felt that some of the students might not have been the most bright (ex. thug-looking kids smoking on campus) which did not impress me. But overall the campus was nice. As far as State, I don't know how I feel about college in Atlanta, probably wouldn't be a full college feel, especially with basically no real campus. I have fairly good grades and want to feel that my hard work in HS has been worth it, so in your opinion Southern or State? (not sure of major yet, maybe criminal justice or business)

Also, I'm considering Mississippi State as another backup(would get in-state tuition, possible scholarship), maybe someone would recommend that over both Southern and State?

Thank You

Hi,
I don’t have experience with Georgia Southern, but as a post bac student at Georgia State, I can tell you that my teachers are excellent (as good as my teachers at Vanderbilt were in the 80’s.) I have a friend who went to Duke for undergraduate who has taken classes at GA State and says the same thing. The other students I encounter each day are serious about their studies, polite, and engaged. No, the campus is not ideal – it is concrete on top of concrete – the school desperately needs green space. Also, I’m not sure I would feel safe living down town. However, I am quite impressed with the education available there. The young students around me (who want to develop a social life) have found many ways to get involved. The new football team adds a much needed focal point. The proximity to MARTA gives great options for living off campus and getting to campus easily. Georgia State is a terrific affordable option. There is a noticeable sense of pride among students, and I see why.

Great information, thanks for the input. I’ve read good and bad reviews, it’s just hard to decide which to believe. I guess it also depends on the student. I definitely think State has a better Rep, but I’m still not sure which I will apply for as a back-up. But like I wrote in the first post, if I do go to one I plan to transfer to UGA once I get 30 credits. So it won’t make a huge difference if it’s only for 1 year.

Thanks
