Forget Stamps. The main concern is Provost, and whether there’s smaller scholarships that’s available to OOS students. Any scholarship, even if just a couple thousand dollars, helps!
I got deferred. Can anyone speculate as to how Georgia Tech decided who was deferred and who got rejected? I am seeing rejected people who seem much better qualified than I am. 1460 SAT, 33 ACT (34 SS), strong ec’s.
@confused6789 Some are speculating essays and short answer questions were a major factor this year. It seems like stats were not the most important part of the application. I have a friend with a 36 and a 35 who both got denied/deferred but I got accepted with a 35. Another potentially important factor is high level math classes, which both of my friends lacked.

With a record high number of applicants, it’s very difficult to predict who will be accepted, deferred, rejected or offered Pathways (admission for sophomore year) based on the impressive stats I see here. Colleges carefully craft their freshman class to meet their needs Georgia Tech needs to reserve a certain number of spots for:
–Georgia residents
–females (typically more males than females apply to tech schools)
–URMs
–first gens
–international students
–athletes
–legacies, etc…
If you don’t fall into one of these categories, the competition for the remaining spots will be especially tough despite great stats and accomplishments given the non-Georgia admit rate is 19%. However, all of you will shine, thrive and succeed in any college that’s lucky enough to have you!!
As a parent of an international student who was denied and offered Pathways, I must say that was a really nice post from you. I will share with my son. BTW, I still don’t understand the logic of Pathway with the absence of a deferred decision first. I suppose they must have mostly built their international student mix for now.
@asij2018 I suspect one reason for offering Pathways is because of anticipation of freshmen dropping out after their first year, thus leaving spots open for sophomore year. Deferred means the student will be reconsidered with RAs, but the outcome can be a rejection (hope not!), but Pathways is guaranteed admission (just not first year) assuming the student meets the criteria. This alternative meets the needs of the school to fill vacancies should some of freshmen not return. Hope this helps.
But also the 22% got deferred shows that they survived the competive early action pool and have another chance. If those students were not fit from the beginning they would get rejected. And I heard deferred students have higher shot of getting in through the regular pool because regular is less competitive then early and also the deferred students get an extra essay to help their admission out
@Confused786 I have no idea. My son has a 35 on ACT, will be NMF, varsity sports with leadership x 4 years, Model UN leadership, hours of volunteer work, 3.75UW GPA and 4.60 wtd., Physics asst experience at local college, IB student, strong essay, top 5 percent, A in AP Calculus, A in AP Physics many more AP classes, AL Chem Society Award, Spartan Races Trifecta award.\ BUT OOS…I have no idea. Even some rejected students would have been a great fit for Tech.
Holistic takes several factors into consideration and yes that includes affirmative action but I do not believe it is solely based on that. If it was I would have had no chance to get in since I am an unhooked OOS Asian male with an engineering major.
@amyandscott to be frank, holistic does not mean aa and it is highly ignorant of you to think so. How else can colleges chose to accept students if everyone has a 1600 SAT, 4.0 GPA? Admissions people need to take into consideration whether a student is a good fit for their college and not just applying for prestige.
