Georgia Tech v/s Purdue v/s UMich

I am currently in my final year of bachelors degree in ChemE in India and want to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering in the US.

The college that im in has a rankwise choice system in applications to univs in the US. So basically, your class rank seals your fate.
Mine allows me to apply to Purdue or UMich or Georgia Tech as my first choice.

The thing is, if I apply to one of these, I cant apply to the other two. Such is the nature of my predicament. I can't choose.

I am open to all research fields, so no prejudices there. Also, my choice for a grad school will be based on the following (in descending order of importance):
Department strength, General work atmosphere, prestige, campus/facilities, social life and surroundings.

I would appreciate any other useful comments, opinions and pros/cons to help me decide.

Thanks.

GT, Mich, Purdue in that order. your school is ridiculous. they can’t do that! applying to just one school?

thanks.

I saw a wikipedia article on GT which says it has a pretty stressful atmosphere. On the other hand, purdue seems to have a nice atmosphere and very good faculty. Plus, I’ll have to mention that I have an apprehension towards biology, so actually GT features at the end of my list.

PS. LOL…Actually, in my school, the system is in place to facilitate the distrbution of recommendations, the department being small and all… It has been made so by students itself, the faculty and admin have nothing to do with it.

Purdue or GT, preferably Purdue.

As long as it isn’t Iowa, any of these three will do. :-)

Actually I would suggest OP to look into Iowa, great engineering program.

Apply to the one you’ll likely be admitted into.

Coolbreeze would go out of his way to discredit yet another thing about Michigan: its engineering program. Why do you hate the school so much again?

From those three choices, i’d say UofM, Georgia, Purdue!! (:

All three schools have top notch Engineering programs. however, Michigan has a stronger overall reputation than GT or Purdue and it also offers undergrads with a more well-rounded college experience.

This said, I do not understand why your school only allows you to apply to just one. Your safest bet is probably Purdue.

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

Iowa normally doesnt take students from my school, so applying there is not an option.
Purdue however has a great accept rate and is my best bet at going anywhere, whereas UMich is highly inconsistent in its intake.

I think Im going for Purdue out of the three.
However, I may consider UCSB for Chem E. The research there is a little too pure science oriented so its not gonna be my first choice…
