I am really interested in going to Georgia Tech and have a few questions. What is the “Georgia Tech GPA” (the classes they count). I understand that they add .5 to every advanced class and count the weighted GPA, is this true? What will help me get in/what do they LOVE to see on applications? I’m half way through my sophomore year and have not taken advanced classed yet (this will change next year, I’m going to take AP math and science, the current classes are slow for me this year). I interned at Google here in Boulder, Co making android apps. I have a 3.58 GPA (without any advanced classes). I was in the high schools football camp the summer going into freshmen year and got really into photography that year. 1st semester I got a 3.4 and second I got a 3.7. The summer going into sophomore year I had a job promoting at CU Boulder and took an American Sign Language class at a local community college. Last semester I got a 3.6. Unfortunately like many high school students I was not applying myself (didn’t study). I got Bs in math and science last 3 semesters. However, now I am working really hard and expect to get As in math and science. I’m working at a pizza shop now and am planning to take math and science programs this summer. Also I am dyslexic (don’t know if colleges like to see that). I am taking an ACT prep class this summer as well as taking the practice ACT this year and next. I also plant to retake it many times, I have 6 opportunities to retake the ACT. If I am not accepted freshman year I plan to go to a school such as CU Boulder and transfer in (I’ve heard you only need a 3.5 to transfer in since people flunk out of GT). My father transferred into GT after getting a undergrad a NCS and finished his masters at GT with a 3.9. I’ve heard that they don’t favor alumni’s kids at colleges anymore however. I plant to hopefully intern at local tech places, any suggestions on things I can do for them? Also please don’t mention how awful GT is, I see a lot of bad reviews of the school online for some reason, I don’t care though. I am prepared to work hard and study while at GT. I would appreciate it if you all can answer these questions for me. Thanks!
I would be majoring in mechanical engineering.
Also I attend a good school district. It won awards so hopefully this helps.
" I understand that they add .5 to every advanced class and count the weighted GPA, is this true? "
I might be wrong but I don’t think they do that anymore. I think they just take the GPA your school gives.
"I’ve heard you only need a 3.5 to transfer in since people flunk out of GT "
No most people do not flunk out of GT.
" I’ve heard that they don’t favor alumni’s kids at colleges anymore however. "
You are in luck since since your DAD is an alumni. If you apply and are denied they have a conditional admission.
Read the link below. If you have 30+ transferable hours.(not including AP,IB.dual credits), complete all the required courses for your major, have a 3.3 college GPA, have 3.3 math/science and apply by the deadline, you will be admitted for the fall one year after you start college full-time. However you must do the above and if you stay at a college longer than 1 year it’s no longer valid. Basically you need to apply, be denied , go somewhere else ,take at least 15 credits both fall and spring term, get good grades, complete the required classes, reapply as a transfer and you are in.
