Get English and Math done First?

Do campus's give preference to students who complete their Math and English requirements of IGETC first compared to those who wait until the spring before transfer? I ask because I've done my Math and first English course, but still need to finish my critical analysis 2nd English class. If it wouldn't affect my chances, I would wait until Spring 2011 to take the class with my preferred professor but since I'm applying for the UCs this Fall, would it just be beneficial to take it in the Fall before transfer?

B

I didn’t finish my second English or my math requirement until the spring before transfer and I still got into LA and Berkeley. I would say it IS an advantage, but it’s going to hurt you less than you think it will. I’d also take into account how many pre requisites for your major that you’ve completed will probably matter a lot more.

I took my 2nd English class and my last math class during my spring semester and I got into Berkeley you will be fine. I choose to wait, so I could take it with a more interesting professor.

Some people were rejected just because of taking english and math last, so exercise extreme caution.

Don’t take more than one of those classes your last semester, and that’s only if you absolutely have to

If there’s a chance of doing poorly in either, or if you have to complete prerequisites to be able to take transfer math or science, you might want to take them as early as possible. I was told that especially with math, if you have to take prerequisites before you can take the transferable course, and if you don’t do particularly well in those, they may assume the worst if you’re taking math the spring before transfer, and that it could affect your admissions. That said, advisement at my school has been very shoddy, so take it with a grain of salt.

Math and English are, from what I’ve heard, the only classes they absolutely won’t take you without (whereas you might get in if you’ll be taking art history over the summer or picking up the last unit or two you need to reach 60), so I wouldn’t put it off too long. If you’ve got prerequisites before the transferable classes, it seems best to get started as soon as possible. If you can go directly into the classes, then it’s only 3 classes and you may as well get it over with. One of my friends will be spending an extra year at community college because she put math off until spring semester and failed it - if there’s any chance you’ll do badly in one of the classes, it makes sense to take it as soon as possible so you’ll have time to repeat it if necessary (this isn’t meant to be condescending or discouraging - it’s more of a reminder that **** can happen - you could get an unbearable professor, might miss a week of class for a verified reason and fall behind, etc).

The advice I got from a professor I trust (as opposed to the advisement office at my school, which is not the best resourse in the world) , was to take Math, English and at least some of your major classes as soon as possible. That way, when you’re applying, you can show that you’re devoted to your major and taking real steps to get IGETC done, and they’re more willing to assume you’ll pass European history/ intro to psychology/geography than calculus/statistics.
