Would completing the IGETC by Fall give somebody leverage compared to somebody who will be finishing it by Spring before transfer?
Applicants that are fully complete at the time of transfer have an advantage
Everything must be done by spring, so I don’t really think it’ll be that much of an advantage. Can’t hurt you, however.
From what I understand, it’s a slight advantage but not the same as having your prereqs done before spring. So if you have the choice between getting IGETC vs. major prereqs done before spring, go with your major prereqs. Unless you still have the big 3 left (English, Math, and Critical thinking)
@ericbadmon Would it be a “bad idea” to have my math requirement done in spring before transfer? I’m trying to prioritize my major requirements first by finishing them by Fall, leaving no room for math until spring.
Yes bad idea. It’s one of the big 3. I heard that UCSB outright rejects ppl for it. It’s not an autoreject but it’ll definitely hurt your chances for admission. Cuz unlike taking English 2 over the spring, you basically wouldn’t have a single math class at this point. At least for the English situation you have previous English classes they can look at to have some basis for you.
Since your major is non-impacted you might just wanna have that math class done over a prereq class and do the prereq class during spring. Talk to an admission counselor about it tho. From what I understand they’re not as adamant about having prereqs done by fall for non-impacted majors.
@ericbadmon thank you so much for the heads up. I’m planning to finish my math requirement this summer, my english in the fall, and my second english requirement in the winter. Does this sound like a better plan?
I think that’d be good. But if you wanted to make it even better, you could take English 1 and math over the summer then take English 2 for the fall. I know it’d be tough but it’s doable. I had to take English and math both in a 4-week winter intersession and did just fine. Cuz basically they’re only guaranteed to look up to your fall semester before you transfer. Anything after that, while you can update them and put them on your application after turning it in, they look at if they want to, it’s not guaranteed. And it 100% won’t account in your GPA used for admission, that’s just their policy for that. So it’d be best to have the English 2 requirement done asap, cuz again, it’s part of the big 3 for general ed.
I know it’s a lot of things but UCLA is a super selective school… and the smallest things at times can be really detrimental to your chances. If I remember correctly, you have a C in one of you major prereqs. So in your case, it’d be best to make-up for that by being on point with everything else.
I’d recommend contacting a UCLA admission counselor with your course plan and see what they say. They’ll be able to give you better information than me, I mean this is what they do for a living lol. Just google “UCLA admissions counselors” and it’ll have a directory for all of their admissions counselors broken down by area/ community college. Email a bunch of them so you have multiple sources. They’re usually pretty good with replying from my experience.
