I will be talking calculus 1 and English 1a in winter.

Calculus 1b and English 2 in spring.

Will doing that hurt my chances of getting in?

Yup unfortunately, if by English 2 you’re referring to critical thinking English, than yes. They’re really looking for applicants that complete those courses by the end of fall. This is what I’ve read on most of these threads

^Are you sure about that? I’ve read on the contrary that if you complete your IGETC or any pre-reqs by spring you should be fine. I’m planning to take Eng 2 (1C for us) this winter.

you’ll be fine. Your math for IGETC will already be done in winter.

It’s best to complete the math / english requirement by the end of Fall before you transfer so that they can confirm those requirements as being completed. Here’s where the confusion comes in: some UC’s don’t like to see you just STARTING those requirements AFTER Fall. If you already have a transferable math and english course on your transcript and you HAVEN’T taken a W, NP, or below a C in either you should be fine completing the rest in Spring. So if you took a transferable Pre-calculus course before Calculus I, you should be fine for the math requirement. English is a different story because it appears you’re just starting on that in Winter. If you get your winter grades in before the winter UC app update they might consider that, but you may be penalized at some of the UCs if you don’t because they don’t like to assume that you’ll pass those courses. Say if you were taking English 1A and passed the course and then took English 2 in spring, you wouldn’t be penalized for spring because they would give you the benefit of the doubt for having passed the class. But in your situation they have to just guess and assume you will pass your English requirements because they likely won’t see your official grades until after decisions are out. The math / english requirement ARE VERY important, even more so than pre-reqs or IGETC. They’re the basic requirements for being eligible so the UC’s do take them very seriously. If they have any reason to believe that you may not satisfy those basic requirements then they’re likely to reject you. That being said, if you’ve taken any AP credit in the subject or have a VERY high GPA they may give you the benefit of the doubt. Some still won’t though, like UCSB is very stringent on the math / english requirement. Last year there was a girl with a very good GPA 3.7+ that was transferring after only one year in CC because she had 30+ units of AP credit. However, she didn’t actually take an actual college English class until spring prior to transferring (she used AP English for English 1) and she was rejected from UCSB. Luckily her grades were high enough that she got accepted to Berkeley / UCLA despite starting that requirement in spring.

^^^Nailed it.

thank you dscott30, Shannon13, dilapidatedmind.

oh and yeah, my precalc 3 class is part of the IGETC math requirement, so I will finish math req. in fall.

Only thing I have to worry is the english class req. in winter and spring
