I currently have an UW 3.86 GPA and I’m taking FLVS Honors Chemistry and it looks like I’m going to finish with a B (semester 1). How much will it bring down my GPA? I’m very worried about it cause my GPA is already low compared to my classmates. My final year grades at school have NOT been put in and I took 7 classes (3 AP’s) and I got straight As. I sure am going to study a lot more for the next semester and hope for an A.
My parents are really strict and don’t know about it and if they do find out, I’m probably getting grounded over the summer, ESPECIALLY if they see my GPA now growing as much as it supposed to as they already think my GPA is low.
If my GPA does go down because of that 1 semester B, how many classes should I take over the summer (and during school) to bring my GPA up?
If your main concern is your parents’ reaction, then I recommend telling them as soon as possible. My opinion is that they sound unreasonable, but then maybe that is just your worry talking. At any rate, it’s always best to report bad news as soon as possible.
You should figure out how to calculate a GPA - it’s usually relatively straightforward but some schools have unique twists.
If you have 7 A’s and a B, that’s approx 3.875. But sciences are often weighted 1.4x if you have 2 lab periods per week. That would be a 3.833. Both are right around your current GPA so it would barely move, if at all.
This is just an approximation. A proper calculation requires knowing your schools’s weighting, how many credits you’ve had to date, and other factors. That’s why learning to do it yourself for your situation is key.
What college targets? If it’s top holistic colleges, they dont go on weighted gpa or an hours figure. They see gpa but look at the transcript and a grade is a grade.
OP, if you’re thinking stem and a tippy top, the B matters more than for humanities. So do what you can to do better in all the other classes plus the right balance of ECs.
If not a tippy top, you may be fine.
(Adding: FLVS is online, virtual school.)
Mantra for the HS student:
Do not think 'Every point I get off of a homework or test is a point away from going to Harvard."
Think: “I need to do my best, and there will be a college that is right for me when I graduate.”
Do not think “If I don’t go to an Ivy League School/Top20, I am doomed forever.”
Think: “No matter where I go, I can bloom where I am planted. I can get involved and shine.”
Do not think: “My life is over…the kid in my math class is taking 20 APs and I am taking 5. I will never succeed.”
Think: “I need to challenge myself, but only to the point where I can still do well.”
@bopper thank you so much for the encouragement. this made me feel so much better
