Getting accepted to UCLA with low stats? I’m hopeless

For reference, I’m OOS. I found out yesterday that I got rejected from UCSB. Although, I did get into Davis a few weeks ago. After the rejection yesterday, I have lost hope in the rest of the UCs. Have any of you experienced getting accepted to UCLA while getting rejected from UCSB? Do any of you guys have any stories of getting accepted with low stats? Seeing some individuals get accepted with a 26 ACT last year get in on CC gives me some hope…

i cant say much on this bc im pretty much in the same boat… although my stats are decent, it’s all so competitive that i lost hope after getting rejected from ucsb…

@camille004 same but I’ve seen people on YouTube get into Berkeley with low act scores. I think there was this one girl that had like a 22 ACT and 4.0 UC gpa and got into Berkeley (but don’t quote me on that). Maybe she was first gen idk but it’s still impressive and gives me hope. She probably had stellar essays. Also I think she got rejected from UCSB and accepted to UCSC. So we can only hope for the best. Admissions is so unpredictable smh

No financial aid for OOS students at the UC’s. Can your parents afford to be full pay?

@TomSrOfBoston I am already aware of that. If it’s UCLA or UCB that I get into, I’d do anything to pay for it. It’s a one in a life time chance. Also this thread isn’t particularly about the financial aspects of UC…

really hoping so, i need this so badly. so many people with low stats got admitted into ucsb with low stats… if you’re above average, you’re screwed. they either only take really academically disadvantaged people or literal geniuses.

A once in a lifetime chance that will take you 30 years to pay off if your parents have to take out mega loans.

“I’ve seen people on YouTube…” Seriously, you rely on You Tube?

Don’t go into the debt hole. It’s nuts. It’s not clear thinking. You can’t have even researched loans if you assume you can a) get loans in that amount or b) pay them back easily and put your life on hold for ten years or more to do so. What sort of future is that?

And before dreaming, seems you may not have researched the admit stats UCLA presents. A 26 places you below the 25th percentile. Well below. At UCSB, the 25th %ile is 28.

And if you’re thinking med school, it’s more than double crazy to take so much in UG loans.

@lookingforward, the OP said he saw acceptances here on CC last year that had a 26 ACT, not that he had one. But to apply to a UC with thinking the money fairy is going to show up is nuts.

On another thread, medstu says:
Major: Biological sciences
ACT: 26 (oof)
GPA: 3.79 (UW), 3.9 (W)

And OOS. So, no aid.

That is really not true @camille004 . Myself and many of my friends at UCSD were average high school students. To say that you have to be a literal genius or disadvantaged is a huge fallacy.

2018 Freshman admit rates with a capped weighted UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 for UCLA: 11.7% and not major related.

UCLA’s 25th-75th ACT percentile: 30-34

@lookingforward So why do oos students apply to uc’s anyway if they know they’re going to go in debt? Why do so many oos students apply to UCLA and UCB every year and end up going as someone last year at my school did? And I don’t rely on YouTube. Never said I did. I just referenced YouTube because I’ve seen instances of people getting accepted with those stats. Doesn’t mean that I have hope. Whether your stats are on the high range or low, it’s all unpredictable.

@lookingforward For med school, it really doesn’t matter where you go for your undergrad, whether it’d be Stanford or your state university. I basically got a full ride to my state university and have already took dual enrollment courses that can transfer for general education classes. I’m sure my state university has a lot of educational opportunities but probably not as much as UCLA.

As for myself, I highly value the educational opportunities that a school provides but the name as well. I’m guilty of obsessing over school name’s and reputation and I know I shouldn’t. I don’t want to put my mom in great debt nor me, but what kind of doctor doesn’t have debt… not all of them get full scholarships for both their undergrad and grad education

Many OOS students come from wealthy families who can afford to pay the tuition. Others may incur huge debt that they will be complaining about to the media saying that they were “forced” to take out the debt to get a college education. Others may apply and get accepted and their parents say “no way”.

Also if you have low stats and somehow manage to get accepted then chances of you getting a GPA at UCLA that will get you into medical school are pretty slim.

@TomSrOfBoston Nothing is impossible. Just because I may not have had the best scores in high school doesn’t mean that med school is totally out of my range. Yes, UCLA is very rigorous. Heck, I probably got rejected. That’s totally fine with me. No need to look down on someone based on their stats even if high school grades correlate with getting into med school.

ACT scores do predict MCAT scores, and yours would not do well.

@CottonTales I honestly didn’t prepare as much as I should’ve on the ACT. I blame it on me. I know that I have the capability of doing well with a lot of hard work when it comes to the MCAT. Predictions are’t reality, let alone define my future. Who knows, maybe I won’t become a doctor later on! Whatever happens, happens.

@medstu1324 No need to get defensive. You asked for thoughts and these senior members who give good advice, gave you good advice. No undergrad is worth 100k+ in debt. You just can’t pay it off without sacrificing financial stability later in life. Most OOS students are able to afford being full pay. Either through 529 plans or parents savings/income. For med school you should go to the school you can get the highest gpa. Prestige doesn’t matter for med school. UCLA is known for grade deflation.

@10s4life Defensive? Haha you’ve gotta be kidding me. I appreciate the thoughts but saying that I’m unable to succeed in college/my future is a bit much. Most of these senior members are adults and should have the decency to be at least polite. Yes, prestige doesn’t matter and I am well aware of that.
