Im currently attending a community college and i am wondering what my chances are for transfering and getting into schools like syracuse, cornell and NYU. My major is general engineering and my current GPA is 3.0 exactly. I started college full time almost 2 years ago when i was 16 and i just turned 18 last month. I am highly involved in student government, newspaper and i am an intern at some neuroscience institute. The highest math class i have taken is Calc 2 and English is 102, the rest of my classes are general electives but are all transferable. Just for the sake of more info, i am a minority.

With a 3.0 I don’t think you have a great chance at any of the universities you listed.

Seems like you want to stay in New York, so why not look up other universities in New York that are not as highly ranked/competitive as the ones you listed?

Only one id bother applying to is Syracuse, and you don’t have a great chance.

alright thank you

DaveKT, I disagree with the above poster. If you’ve made it through the first two years of engineering with a 3.0 or greater, than many schools will be interested to talk to you. Perhaps those you listed are reaches, but if you talk to your community college people, they may be able to give you a stronger indication of how people from this community college do in terms of applying to NYU, Cornell, Syracuse.

In the meantime, look at RPI, Suny Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo and many others that will welcome you with open arms. People do get into their reach schools, so don’t give up on NYU, Cornell, Syracuse.

He’s borderline for a 2.9 and you think he has a shot at CC? These schools hardly accept many transfer students, and most of those students have great GPAs. 3.3~3.4 maybe I’d say you have a chance, but not a 3.0.

Ofcourse, if you feel strongly for the schools or have a reason for your low GPA (medical emergency, etc…) then give it a shot.

But once again, there are a lot of other great schools in New York. You can get out of a CC, but apply to some match schools.

SUNY’s with Engineering and Binghamton and Buffalo.

Have you taken Chem? Physics? You may want to take them at your CC this summer.

You wrote that you took mostly general electives. Sounds like you may have 3 years of engineering ahead of you. Consider cost when applying.

How strong are you in science? Math? Engineering is a tough major. Buffalo, Syracuse. Penn State and RIT are similarly ranked in engineering. Less competitive (maybe) for engineering where you may be accepted- URI.

Sorry i did not clarify, i took 2 chemistry classes (one past the 101 level) and a biology class (past the 101 level). For Calculus 1 and 2 i average a C, for chem a B and for biology a B. The rest of my classes were English and Behavioral/Social Science classes, none at the core level (all were college level). I know that there are a number of people with my situation of graduating high school early but I was hoping that with all that i have accomplished by my age, that it would help me a lot in the application process.

Are you currently considered a high school student enrolled in college classes, or did you graduate from HS 2 years ahead of schedule? Will you have an associates degree?

Yes i graduated 2 years early, i would be a senior now. I was not planning on an associates degree. But based on my major and the classes i have taken, i can get one by the end of this semester. I was just planning on transferring.

I believe you are an unusual case, and therefore, it would be difficult to predict your chances. Call the college(s) you are interested in to get a better understanding.

ya i have and they pretty much say the same thing, “oh… well if you have completed more than 30 credits just submit a transfer application and you will hear from us soon.”
