Hi guys,
I’m trying to transfer to Berkeley or UCLA with a statistics major.
Both schools require calc 1-3, linear algebra, and differential equations.
I got a B in Calc 1, A in Calc 2, and now it looks like I might be getting a B in linear.
How bad does it look that I have not been getting straight A’s in my major prereq classes? Do I have a chance at either of these schools?
For Berkeley, it definitely hurts but it’s not the end of the world. A high overall GPA can supersede a relatively lower prerequisite GPA. IMHO, you would need a 3.80+ GPA to stay competitive for pre-stats admission.
Frankly speaking, most admits with lower prerequisite GPAs tend to struggle in the required Math 110 / Stat 134 / Stat 135 classes when they get here which (usually) keeps them from declaring the Stats major with the GPA requirement. Regardless of your final grades, keep learning the material as mastery of those fundamentals is necessary to thrive survive here.
