Transferring to UCB (Statistics)

I am planning to fill out and turn in UC app this fall to UCB(statistics), but i have few questions to ask.

If i do not complete Igetc by this fall, does it affect my acceptace rate?

how competitive is statistics to get in to UCB? (avg GPA, completion of IGETC, Prereq, etc.)

would ESL classes' grades affect transferring ?

1.You need to complete IGETC by the end of spring before summer prior to transfer. Berkeley’s College of Letters and Sciences (which Statistics is in) is pretty strict on that. And they don’t accept summer courses.

Statistics is not a capped major compared to say, Psychology or Economics. The average GPA is fairly unknown, I would ask a UC Berkeley Representative. Also, you should focus on completing your prereqs and maintaining a high GPA (3.7 and up will make you competitive).

No. So long as you have taken your transferable English courses you should be good.

Statistics is now a capped major; current Berkeley students who want to declare it must have at least a 3.2 GPA with no grade lower than a C in the math prerequisites (Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54), and a B- or higher in Statistics 134 or 135. Note that it was formerly uncapped through spring 2013, when a minimum of C grades in the math prerequisites was all it took to declare the major.

Presumably, this means that transferring in from another college may be more difficult than for most L&S majors. Assuming that you transfer with all of the math prerequisites complete (best to complete IGETC to get breadth out of the way), you would be expected to take Statistics 133 and 134 in your first semester at Berkeley, then declare the major, assuming at least a B- in Statistics 134.

You guys are amzaing! Thank you very much!
but i have few more questions:

What does it mean that statisics is a capped major? does it mean that it is hard to get in? is applied mathematics a capped major?

If i turn in my application in fall, i will not complete the pre req classes, by that time i will only have math 1A, 1B and 1C in the fall quarter.

should i wait another year?

At UCB, capped majors are often a bit harder to get into, and generally speaking you have one semester at Cal to have all prerequisites finished and to apply for the major… Most would say that to be competitive, you should have all pre-reqs finished prior to transferring, however.

"‘Capped’ means that some majors restrict admission due to very high student interest and demand. Each of these majors restricts admission in a slightly different way. Some use heightened grade requirements in prerequisite courses. Some use special application deadlines and essays. Some use a combination of these. Plan early! Junior transfers (those with 60 or more units completed at the time of transfer to Berkeley) are given one semester - their first of the Berkeley campus - to apply for a capped major. "

There is no harm in applying and seeing what happens. The worst thing they can do is reject you, which means maybe you stay one more year wherever you are.

According to the L&S website http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/pyyac/nonigetc/capped.html</a>
The following majors in the College of Letters and Science are currently capped:

Economics
Media Studies (formerly Mass Communications)
Operations Research & Management Science (ORMS)
Psychology
Public Health
Social Welfare

Looks like L&S cannot keep all of their lists in sync. Here is a list of all L&S majors, with the capped ones marked:
http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/major/majorlist.html</a>
This one has art practice and environmental economics that the previous one lacks. However, it does not reflect the recent changes of statistics and computer science to capped majors.

Math or applied math is not a capped major. You just need an average of a C in Math 1A and 1B, and minimum of C in each of Math 53, 54, and 55 (and any upper division math courses taken) to declare the major, although the department recommends that only those with B- or higher in Math 53, 54, and 55 declare the major.
