How difficult is it going to be for me to get into the classes I need? I am planning on taking Chem6A and BILD1(and others that aren't science related) my first quarter but I don't have that many AP credits(i took 6 AP classes in HS) I really don't want to get behind but from what I've heard its quite difficult to get into science classes at UCSD. I'm currently undeclared(not by choice) but I want to get into the Biochem/Cell Biology major. How hard is it going to be to get in these classes and if I don't what will I do?!

it’s way too early to be worrying about this. your first registration cycle is determined by lottery so your presumed lack of AP credits won’t hurt you. beyond that, every chem 6 class and at least one BILD is offered every quarter (including summer) so you’ll get around to taking them eventually. there’s no rule that says you need to take them in sequence.

I took 3 AP classes in high school, passed 2 of the tests, am double minoring, and get all of the classes I need. You’ll figure out scheduling quickly. I wouldn’t worry.

Don’t sweat it. I also didn’t take that many AP’s. I came in undeclared too and just switched into bio, and I had to take chem 6a in winter my first yr since I got a really bad registration time. But on second thought I could’ve probably gotten into chem 6a in fall if I wait listed since a lot of people drop. It’s not too hard getting into the large lower division classes req for a lot of majors/pre-med like Chem 6 series and BILD, it’s only hard to get into bio/chem lab classes from what I’ve experienced so far. Getting a good teacher though for your classes takes a little more luck/units. So don’t worry if you don’t get the classes in fall, but you should try to follow the recommended bio major sample plan to stay on track, because then you’ll have best pick of teachers, unlike me who only had one choice of teacher for both chem 6b and 6c, and you will have better spacing of your classes (unless you do summer school) like I had to take chem 6c and physics1A+1AL at the same time uggh.

Unless you have a really early enrollment time, you’re probably going to be put on a waitlist for chem 6a. Don’t worry about it. I was #27 for a class of 40 and I got in the day before classes started. And you can’t take BILD 1–chem 6a is the prereq. You can take BILD 3, though!

If you know what major you want to transfer into, try to set aside a few GEs you can sign up for in case you don’t get into the class you want. Only the labs seem to fill as far as I know, and I still could’ve gotten into Chem7L if waitlisted. Don’t worry if you get a bad time and the chem class fills up either. That happened last year and they opened up more slots. People also drop like flies–after the first day, I moved up 11 spaces on the waitlist for my physics class :D

And also, I feel like there is this notion out there that if you don’t get the professor that EVERYBODY LOVES that you’ll be totally screwed. That’s of course completely not true (largely). I’ve had great professors that definitely weren’t the most popular.

Or purposely take the more difficult professors and then kick ass in the class. You get bragging rights and you’re way ahead in the next class of the sequence.
