How hard is it to get accepted as a freshman to Newhouse? What about transferring into Newhouse from Arts & Sciences? Is it as hard as getting into an Ivy, or is it not really as competitive as they say it is? What are they typically looking for?

Hi Michael’s Mother…lots of questions; I’ll take one at a time:

1) Acceptance as a freshman: it is hard, but not impossible…typically (or at least for class of 2012) they accept about 25-30% of 3000 applicants trying to achieve a class of 325…

2)Tranferring from A&S: GPA driven 100%…take the # of openings for transfers and start with top GPA, working downward until class is filled…every year a different # of transfers are taken.

3)It is definitely as competitive as they say it is and it is not only stats driven; very holistic process…the majority of people we know accepted as freshman (as my daughter was) have either very high stats, experience in communications in HS, or both. In addition, we were told that english course rigor was very important (and grades in those courses as well)…I might add that we know students who were not accepted who had high stats and those who were accepted that did not…

To piggy back on what rodney mentioned on the GPA, generally to transfer into Newhouse you would need to pull a 3.6+ GPA. Remember, you’re not only competing against students that are already in the University trying to internally transfer but you’re competing against students all over the country that are trying to get in. So you would need your GPA to be as high as possible.

Hi! I am just wondering what my chances are at getting into newhouse. I have a 91 unweighted gpa in all ap courses. A 1300 currently on the sat, although i will take it again. a 29 on my act. But, i am part of the 2nd best MUN team in the world, where i have won many awards at conferences like Harvard, Brown, and Chicago. I have my own spots blog, and am a editor for my schools newspaper(hopefully editor in chief next year). I play Varsity Baseball and Basketball, and my cousin is Mike Francesa who is the host of his own radio show in NY

haha…is Mike a Newhouse alumni? Sounds like you have a good chance, although as you said, you may want to pick up that SAT…but EC’s are right there…will you apply ED?

yeah i am going to apply ed

plus my brother goes to the a and s there, and ive interviewed there new football coach for my school newspaper. Plus, ive been told by teachers along with industry leaders that i have a lot of potential in the field

chill out with all the credentials. apply and syracuse will tell you if they feel youre qualified

it’s all good…sounds like a match!!GL
