Getting more financial aid?

I know a lot of private schools like the Ivies are willing to match aid, but I'm wondering if a public school like Berkeley is willing to do the same? I got tons of aid from Columbia (I only have to pay 4k a year and I got 54k in fin aid) but I have to pay 25k at Berkeley. I don't expect them to completely match Columbia, but is there any chance that they'll increase my aid, even if only by a few thousand (for this reason, since I haven't had any income changes are anything like that for the appeal forms)?

And should I call them, send them an email, actually go to their office or what? I really want to go to Berkeley (it's been my top choice for years) but my parents are going to make me go to Columbia if I don't get more aid from Berkeley. :(

Out of state fees are about 23k a year, and it is very unlikely that you will get a FA offer that covers them. I guess it doesn’t hurt to try, but don’t hold your breath for any increase.

I’m actually in-state though. Would that make a difference?

Oh.

That’s really weird then. If you’re in-state, yeah, definitely try to get more. I don’t see why Berkeley would offer you so little, if Columbia gave you almost a full ride…
