Getting recommendations from teachers

I remember seeing a great post noting the best way to obtain recommendations, yet not be offensive or make the student or teacher feel "ill at ease." What was suggested was the student either ask, or if too insecure, email the teacher the following:" Now that colleges are upon me, I need some recommendations. Is there any reason that you feel that you cannot give me a strong recommendation."

Personally, I thought this was a great way to achieve recommendations. If you like this, pass it on to your kids.

Never use email to ask for a recommendation. It is very bad form. Choose the classy route and ask in person.

And be sure to actually ask. The problem with the quotation in the OP is that it doesn't include the courtesy of a direct request; instead, it almost assumes that the teacher will write the rec. This is not an impression you want to risk when asking for a letter.
