I was wondering how most students commute from the DC Area (or anywhere else I guess) to Kenyon. I don't think my family could afford a plane ticket every time I would need to travel to and from DC (which might be a lot given the health of a family member). I also am not entirely sure whether I will have a vehicle. Is there a bus system that goes to Columbus and then to Kenyon?

Thanks.

There are tons of Kenyon students from the DC area, you should be able to hitch a ride for some gas money without a problem for breaks. For non-break travel you can take a greyhound bus to the Columbus depot and arrange for a friend to pick you up.

In reality though, it might be wise to attend a school closer to home for a few years and transfer to Kenyon later on if possible. Frequent trips back and forth will be disruptive and probably not lead to the best experience for you. Not to mention that it should be less stressful on you as well.

The other thing to think about is that flying has gotten a lot cheaper. Mol is right; you should give some consideration to where it makes the most sense to be. The going rate for a one way plane ticket to BWI is $39 plus taxes and fees, $100 (non-stop) to IAD. Obviously traveling is time expensive and time consuming. It’s a 400 mile 6 hour drive. A lot of student do drive, but gas is probably $40, split a couple ways.

If you’re heading home around break-time, you should have no problem at all finding a ride. Other times, you’ll probably have to fly, but as it’s been pointed out, that’s not TOO expensive. But if you’re going to going home A LOT, then you might want to think about staying closer to home.
