Which train station is quickest and easiest to get to from college park -metro. New Carrollton or Union Station DC. Trying to figure out the best way home to NJ.

there is a metro stop on campus that can take you to either station

You have a few options.

Metrorail: You can metro your way from college park to Union Station or New Carrollton. As you’re going into DC and coming out if you tack the NC route, Union Station is faster and cheaper.

MARC: The MARC train serves College Park and goes directly into Union Station during rush hour on weekdays. Check the schedule for train departures. If you time your arrival to the station accordingly to minimize waiting time, this is faster, and if Metro is charging Peak fares at your departure time, and you have no SmarTrip card, this is actually cheaper too. (Metro charges $1 extra for not having SmarTrip) Again, make sure you watch the schedule so you don’t have to wait on the platform too long. By the way: $4 cash only, and no go on weekends.

Shuttle UM: Again, check schedules, but there’s a route that takes you directly from the UM campus to New Carrollton. There are only seven departures daily, each more than two hours apart, so plan carefully. Who knows what traffic will be like, but it’s direct and could be your best option. I’m assuming you have your university ID, which makes it free.

Metrobus B30: You can use Shuttle UM to go to Greenbelt station, and take the B30 directly to BWI airport. Buses depart every 40 minutes or so. Fare is $6 whether you have SmarTrip or not. Since BWI airport is closer to NJ, it might be cheaper than starting the train trip in NC or Union Station, but if not, forget about it. Check Amtrak for prices from each of your potential starting points and see if BWI makes a difference.

Hope I helped! I live around here and am a public transportation fan for some reason.

Everyone thank for the information. The transportation system is a little overwhelming for a newbie.

thanks again

If you’re simply metro-ing from the UMD station, you’ll get to Union Station faster. Shouldn’t be over 20-30 minutes. To get to New Carrollton, I believe you have to transfer at L’enfant to get on the orange line, and in total could be like 40-45 minutes (I could be slightly off as this is all from memory, but I believe that is the faster way to New Carrollton).

Another option available for transport home to Jersey during Turkey Day, Winter and Spring breaks only is a very convenient bus leaving directly from Maryland campus, with stops in Cherry Hill and MetroPark, NJ as well as Port Authority, NY. Here is the link with the info and other options:
