Getting Your Financial Aid

My simple question: How do we get it? Grants, scholarships, and loans?

Also, I signed up for the Direct Deposit Transfer, and it said that a notice was mailed to me, but I never got it. I'm not even quite sure what the direct deposit transfer is for...

And the overnight housing fee for orientation, can you pay that with your financial aid? How?

All the money that was from your award package is sent to the school. They pay for tuition and room+board(assuming you're living on campus) then they use the direct deposit to give you the remaining funds.
And the orientation housing is just added onto your first bill (so it is payed for with the fin aid.

So I don't really have to do anything when tuition and fees are due?

When tuition and fees are due, they will be automatically deducted from your account if you have enough scholarships, grants, funds, etc. to cover them. Any excess funds in your account will be directly deposited into the bank account you used to sign up for direct deposit. The direct deposit transfer notice is usually just emailed to your UW email account. If you received scholarships from outside the university, you should request the funds be sent to the scholarship office at UW (you can find their address by just googling UW student fiscal services). Your scholarship and financial aid funds will be deposited into your UW account during the week before fall quarter starts. If you have any additional costs on your UW account (tuition and fees, etc.) that are not automatically deducted, you can pay for them with the web check option (just click on your tuition statement and the option will appear). It's not hard at all.

For loans you have to sign a Master Promissory Note, that adknowledges that you will indeed pay back the funds loaned to you and spells out the terms.

You should check your account when the payment deadline is getting close, though, because if for some reason your funds haven't come through (like your promissory note being late) you are expected to front the money and then get paid back when your financial aid does come through. This will not be applicable to the vast majority of students whose financial aid comes through on time, but is good to know, just in case.

when is the promissory note due?

i haven't signed it yet

Not sure about due date- but you can find it on your MyUW account, under the heading "Student Guide Headlines".

How do you use loans to buy textbooks?

When you get your financial aid disbursement (you should've signed up for direct deposit transfers if you haven't already), you use that money to buy your books. You should keep track of your receipts as textbook expenses are tax-free since they're required for educational purposes.
