Girls get an admissions boost?

Let me preface this by saying I have zero idea if it's true or not.

My friend, who is applying to CMU's CFA, has told me that her private counselor said that girls have a significantly higher admissions boost than men here-- something like a 65% admission rate compared to 30%. Is there any fact to this? If it's true, is it because of the low girl:guy ratio at the school itself? I'm not sure what to believe. That number seems ridiculously high to me.

Yes, girls do get an admissions boost. I'm not sure about how much it helps for CFA, but in CIT and SCS, with the girl to guy ratio as low as 1:4 being a girl can offer a big boost.

1:4 just for clarification is probably just the applicant ratio. As far as I know, CMU has a 60:40 guy:girl student ratio, which is manageable.

I've applied to H&SS-- what about the boost there? I've been unable to find any statistics which break down male and female applicants to each college, or to CMU itself.

The male/female breakdown by college can be found in the factbook on CMU's website. Here is a link to latest one.

That's perfect! So it's only a 12% boost. Hmm...
