Girls Leadership Worldwide 2015

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if any fellow CCers know anything about, or will be attending, Girls Leadership Worldwide at the Eleanor Roosevelt Center this summer. I got in for session 2, and will most likely be attending.
I really do not know a lot about the program, so any information would be great

I registered for an account just to comment on this post. I attended GLW last summer and it was the best 9 days of my life. The room was kind of small and the dorm was a little old but that didn’t really matter. We stayed at Vassar and took one of those big nice buses (with the TVs and stuff) to ValKil. There was the cottage where Eleanor used to stay and there was a building that was more of an educational center where we did most of our activities. The first day they will give you a journal and you can write tons of notes in it. There will be a lot of really interesting workshops and guest speakers that are so amazing. The first day or so you will learn a lot about Eleanor and what she did. As the program progresses you will learn tons of cool things and make a bunch of friends. The days in NYC are so fun. The food is pretty good, lunch generally was on the healthy side so if you’re not used to salads and healthy sandwiches maybe pack some snacks. At breakfast we were in a different cafeteria that was like a WaWa almost so I always grabbed an extra apple or snack for later in the day but we were only there bc of construction so you might not be there. If you have any questions you can ask me and I will try to help. Honestly just be outgoing on Day 1 and you will have a great time.

@jran8940 Thanks so much for the information! I was also wondering if you could tell me more about the days in NYC. What did you guys do there? Also, did you fundraise for the camp? I really want to, especially because I will be attending 2 not inexpensive summer camps this summer. The catch for me though is that I can’t ask any of my family members.

We spend two days in NYC, day 4 and 5 of the program. I actually have my schedules still (every day they will give you a schedule with the hour by hour rundown, the meals, reminders, weather, etc. they are so organized it was amazing) so I will tell you what we did both days.
Day 1 we toured the Roosevelt house and did a workshop with a group called Girl Be Heard. They did some really thought provoking skits and then we did an activity or two. Then we went to the UN and we got to hear from some people with the US Mission for the UN. Then we went to JP Morgan to talk about careers in finance. That night we had dinner at the Friars Club where we got to network with some really amazing women and hear a fantastic speech.
Day 2 we toured the 9/11 Memorial which was really amazing but if you didn’t feel comfortable touring it for whatever reason you could stay outside with a counselor. Then we had bag lunches in a park and we split up into smaller groups. The groups were based on a survey we took before the summer started about our interests, (although none of us remember filling out this survey haha) When we got the groups most of us were happy with where we were but if you really wanted to switch you could. We went to a career site visit. Some people went to CNN, some people went to Girl Rising (a feminist organization, if you haven’t heard of them you should look them up it’s an amazing organization). Some girls went to Human Rights Watch which I didn’t hear much about and I went to the NYC District Attorney’s office. I thought it was really cool because I am interested in law. We learned about what a DA does and how it differs from other careers in law, and then we got to sit in a courtroom as we saw bails being set for real cases! Then we all had dinner wherever we wanted, I think most groups went to times square. Finally, we ended by going to a movie set for a small film that Giancarlo Esposito was working on. He is the guy from Breaking Bad (I think?) and there was some actress from either Teen Wolf or Vampire Diaries, everyone was in love with them but I have never heard of them haha. We got to hear him talk about activism and then we saw some of the film being shot.
Obviously the schedule will not be exactly the same this year but that’s just what we did. I’m sure whatever they have planned for this year is just as fun if not more so.
I did not fundraise because my grandparents paid for the tuition as a birthday gift for me. I would suggest maybe getting a part time job or doing more chores around the house? Sorry I can’t be of more help on that part.
