Honors Program

I have been invited to apply to the honors program. Is anybody here in it or know much about it? Is anyone else from the class of 2010 planning to apply? It sounds amazing.

Additional question in this same vein, how many students are asked to apply, how many actually apply and what is the admission rate?

Hey guys, I'm planning on applying this year! I'd also like some additional info if anyone knows anything more about it, specifically how it affects scheduling. I was wondering it would make my proposed Chinese/Biochemistry double major impossible or help facilitate it (the brochure mentioned that many students double major between the two colleges).

I can answer question for y'all about the Honors program, having been a member during my time up here....i do need to do some work tonight so I won't post too much this first time. Simply put the average number of people in it are 60 per Freshman class...approximately 30 from College of Science and 30 from Arts and Letters. Sorry but the engineering intents or business majors are not eligible...

I don't know how tough the admissions process is actually, but I can find out for you....I know that I was asked to apply via letter sent about a month after I made it in EA. At that point you had to write an essay and a personal statement and submit them back to the program directors who presumably control who is allowed in each year...

Hope this helps, more will come later tomorrow...

just to add to nemos post, there actually is a new honors engineering program since i received some information on it. i think it started this year or starts next year.

When is it due?

it was due last friday i believe ...

On the subject of the A&L and Science HP here is the website for the program itself...

<a href="http://www.nd.edu/%7Ealhonors/pages/prspective_stdnts/index.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.nd.edu/~alhonors/pages/prspective_stdnts/index.htm</a></p>

Its likely that I'll actually cross paths with Professor Delaney in the next day or two, in which case I'll inquire for the information being sought. If there are still specific questions about the program after you read the info, feel free to ask me. I'll try and answer them.

Another question for you, nemo- is it possible to use AP credits to bypass freshman year honors classes (I'm specifically interested in English, Calculus AB/BC, and History)?

Yes it can be done...Here's the website for the rubric of what score converts to what classes as far as the FYS is concerned.

<a href="http://www.nd.edu/%7Efys/creditbyexam.html#AP%5B/url%5D">http://www.nd.edu/~fys/creditbyexam.html#AP</a></p>

I know from personal experience I can in w/o having to do First Year Comp, or take a history class. Plus I started with calc 3 in my Freshman year. Be aware as far as math is concerned you will still have to do two classes even if you get out of the calc...Hope this info helps. I'm still getting info on HP and will post it when I have it all gathered up.

Thanks, Nemo. Is there is an extra math requirement for the Honors Program or are those math classes required across the board?

Hmm...that's confusing...you were allowed to bypass your English requirement? I'm in the Engineering Honors Program, and I had to take Honors Seminar...and Honors Seminar takes care of your FYC AND literature requirement anyway...

ditto for the A&L/Science HP...there is a two semester honors seminar that takes the place of FYC and your University Lit requirement...I interpreted shellzie2006's question to be independent of the HP, rather a stupid mistake considering the thread it was posted in...
